Splitter resale values

I may be making a splitter but have been looking around for ideas. One thing that interests me is this.
I'm partial to American CLS splitters. They are bigtime rugged and simple.
I've looked at several and it seems they are fetching overly big resale values. Please comment on:
Unit with 12HP Kohler K engine, 22 gallon pump, heavy duty log table, 4" cylinder, seems to have a slow cycle, 16 years old.Owner wants 1500 bucks despite having been in heavy duty commercial service cranking out firewood, much with nasty knots, etc. Engine runs good, cylinder appears to be weeping a bit.
Also, American splitter with massive 4 way wedge, 14HP Kohler engine, 28 gallon pump, heavy commercial service for 17 years, owner wants 1700 bucks.
Sound high to you? Please comment.

either one sounds like an excellent deal! 22gpm w/4in should have very fast cycle times. don't worry about re-sealing, that's maintenance. unless something is hugely wrong... wouldn't give a thought going with a used HD splitter. main problem is finding one..

I'd go with the 28gpm one... let me know if you pass. I might be interested.

good used splitters are far and few inbetween and have great resale values.

note: as with any commercial splitter with a lot of hours... be prepared to replace hydraulic pump, motor and reseal. if you've got welding skills, you can put one together for aprox. same costs.

test your skills, draw some plans up, if you have the equipment build! This way you know exactly what you have in your machine, no guess work on age of pumps, lines, cylinder, etc... and once you've built it you will know exactly how everying is installed and will have no trouble with a fix. Good Luck

i'm using a kholer 12.5hp on mine to power a 6 x 24 cylinder, 22gpm pump.

my cycle time is about 12 to 14 seconds...depending how i count. i'm not into cycle times that much to use a stop watch.

the thing splits anything i can throw on it

I sold my 37ton northern for $1500. I took a $500 loss on a splitter that was less than six months old. It all depends. :monkey:

A local guy is trying to get $7500 for a 4 year old Timberwolf 6. It has been advertised for over a month.
