its part of the biz i think climber should have his own rope and saddle with a safety lanyard(flipline)

And the choice for saddles has expanded so much too, nor guy likes this another hates it (I never could get used to floating D) Then there are work boots, camelbak, many young guys climb with backpacks, I know guys with a saddle for TD and another for trims.

I have about 5 different ropes and 4 fliplines for different applications.

5 diff ropes or fliplines isnt 'bling' i wouldnt use a 200' rope for a 40' tree either
camelbak, backpacks, cell phones, ipods, and more stuff u dont really need is bling to me if u need a drink have your ground worker tie it on I dont know about anyone else but i really want less weight as possible hangin from me and plus it just it the way to caught on stuff

maybe 2 belts that blackjack i think is really wide in the back great for spur climbing but not as comfy as other things i got an regular weaver thick leg straps floating D its pretty wide in the back and more comfy then my mentors blackjack i call it the crusher it had the butt seat with skinny leg straps when i was hanging on it my legs just went together but his back hurts him and he loves it for removals

saddle bling....lmao....phrase of the week! ( I lay claim to "armchair arborist" couple of months ago haha).

I already got 3 saddles and found myself ordering a $400. saddle today. "A sucker is born every minute", WC Fields.

Usually it is said a good climber is spoiled by too much time in a bucket. I think a good groundy may get spoiled by a mini skid. Either one may loose fitness or mental edge by using these 2 machines and want to use them even if property damage may occur or they are not appropriate.

Yup nothing but hatchets for the groundy's lol:cheers:

thinking of another one myself! lol

TEB. advance past the old school way. you'll love it.

hey jeff. thats great that you are throwing this climber a bone. im thinking it is definitely a way to keep him around. maybe offer to fill his gas tank on the odd occasion as well?

skies the limit if you dont want to hand him straight cash as far as a "bonus" will go.

i like it.

At any rate, Jeff, it sounds like you are keeping a step ahead and looking at the future. If you want a bunch of miserable sob's then treat them like crap but if you want shinning stars let them know how much you love them but watch out for those who take advantage.

Yup, I have a great crew and a great crew is productive and they are like family.
Jeff

What saddle did you get? I need a new one. I blew out my rope ring and saw snap last weekend on the one I have now. Gonna have to get a new one whether I want to or not.

I got the Pinnacle Classic with the extra $ for the padding and some snaps instead of the cinchers. Also added the $70. comfortable looking suspenders. I am old school, it works for me, seat saddle, don't like the around the leg stuff or the sliding d, etc. Comes right around to $400. Expect it to feel just like my old Blair Eucman but much lighter.

Same here. I was never able to get used to the leg straps and floating D's. I'm glad to see they are starting to bring the bosun seats back with the newer designs. I'm thinking of trying something with a rope bridge but I want a seat saddle and not leg straps. I'll give the Pinnacle a look.

pinnacle was my first saddle. now i am on the mini boss which is set up just like the pinnacle.

you spreading the rings or putting them together on the pinnacle?

I use a spreader snap (non safety, can't stand em) and often one on top of another with a short climbing line with a safety knot tied in the end when double crotching. Way old school like I said. It works for me, too old for new tricks and no patience.

Did just add the petzl Ascendtree and couple of pantens to become a little more contemporary instead of straight footlocking (with a double camming device).

Spreader snap--haven't heard that in a few years. I used it on my euc saddle years ago. I don't recognize half the terms these young guns are using about micro ascending devices and such. I'm still climbing one over two. Real old school. West coast saddle, floating D-$125, 020, prusik lanyard, hand saw, body thrust. Ithink I've become a walking, talking anachronism.

i really like the one i have. the glide. has floating d, leg straps and quick relase everything. the floating d is nice, but not worth the tradeoff of having to step into the thing every time u put it on. i really like the leg straps tho. the single butt strap always would squeeze my legs together, pinching my n*ts. the bosun is a big stiff thing on your butt, nice if you're sitting around alot but i found it impedes me alot when you're squatting in a crotch or straddling a limb

Any kind of incentive plan made by an employer should be in monetary form, anything but is hogwash.

I agree fully!!

Not only does this sound illegal but unethical.

And in Canada at least, it is illegal (unless you show it as a taxable benefit on their earnings at end of the year).

I bought a whole box of em when a tree biz went out a few years ago and had an auction. Really nice for throwing when you snap one snap back onto the climb line above the bolen, then wrap the tail around the snap and capture it back in the other snap. Don't wanna get hit in the cheek bone when it swings over the limb your tossing tho.

I am still taughtline too, but one over two?.....I remember some guys using that one. I think the taughtline was a much better climbing hitch on manilla line than it is on these synthetics. It didn't roll out as much.

I am old school with climbing set up but not so on other things. First day things came out like Gibbs ascender for lanyard, porty, bollard, big shot, aluminum blocks, strap on leg handsaw, fiberglass segmented poles, autofeed chipper, etc. etc. I was right there with money in hand.

Ease of use is everything. I have my all dayer saddle that is kept in a rope bag with suspenders but most of time I am thowing on my cheapo Buckingham, don't even bother attaching the legstraps (seat saddle) to go up a quick prune or rem. then bale out and toss the saddle over by the fence out of the way. I make my own lanyard with safety blue and snap bolened, and the other end attached to a small swivel snap off the saddle to prevent kinking.

I use one over two going up, then once i'm working either one over three or if I'm feeling particularly exposed--two over three. You're right, of course, about the slippage factor on synthetics. I leave a knot at the end of the tail so it doesn't slip through the taut hitch. The knot is also good for cinching the taut. Probably the most sickening feeling you can have is doing an overhead lay back cut, fully extended with all your weight on the knot, then with then piece cut half way through the knot starts creeping. That's when I start thinking about the Blake's.

I like leg strap-on pruning saws and am glad I'm not using oak nosing anymore for pole saws. What I find as I age is that when I'm bucking wood on the ground, the chain bars have gotten longer.
