On my project 028 I just replaced the needle cage bearing in the clutch and found a home-made spacer behind the sprocket washer. Its only a few thousandths thick. For curiosity, I reassembled without it and the sprocket washer was very loose. Obviously that spacer was taking up the "slop". My question is Whats up with the spacer? What is worn to the point of adding that in there?

I take it your saw has a separate rim sprocket? It is supposed to float a little on the splines of the clutch bell. Get rid of that washer(the added one) it's not supposed to be there.

Dang that Andy, beat me to it......

I think he's talking about the crank end washer. Doesn't matter if it's rim or spurs... no need to pad the sprocket with any washer other then the factory washer behind the crank end clip.
