What kind of starter rope do you guys use? Gonna re-wind most of my saws and plan on buying a spool. Anyhow, I measured the rop on my saws with calipers...about 4.15mm. Does that mean it was 4.5mm rope and it shrunk from "tightening" as the saw has been starter so many times. Or is it 4.0mm rope that has swelled from fuel, dirt, etc. getting on it?

seems pull rope is skinny as late?i remeber the stuff bein alot fatter and breakin less.I would lovr to see if the dealer is sellin the wrong stuff.(oh and i could always use some free stuff from you all givin dealers)lenghts in about 1 footy would be great

I know that this is not what you asked, however, I have a son in the National Guard that gets a lot of green "parachute cord" or whatever. It works great on Briggs/Stratton 5hp motors. I run 5hp go-carts and always yank the cord out of them. The green cord that he gets it the best.

You may try measuring the inside width of the starter pully with the calipers. Then get starter rope that's closest to this measurement without being larger so it recoils easily. This is what I do.

Thanks Dan! Gonna go with some 4mm rope to be on the safe side!

Cord size

Four Paws:

My service manual shows 4mm for the Shindaiwa's 550 and up.
3.8mm for 488 and smaller.

950mm length on the 550 and up saws.
700mm on 488 and 357
750mm on the rest

Thanks! I would like to see your service manual - where did you get it? I have all the IPLs from their website, but haven't had much luck finding a service manual. Let me know how I can get my hands on a copy!

Service manual

I got mine off of e-Bay but I would think a dealer would be able to hook you up.

Got my rope in yesterday from Bailey's. Bead blasted and re-painted my recoil on the 695, and re-wound it after the paint had dried (baked it in the wife's oven for a nice, hard finish...Shhhhhhhh!). Really impressed with the Tiger brand starter rope - especially for the price! Now, I have another 197 feet, and about 8 more machines to re-wind. I think I'll be covered for the rest of my years.

I picked up 2 spools of rope from Bailey's a couple years ago. I think it is Tiger rope and it was on clearance, maybe $8/spool. Got 2 sizes to take care of all my saws. I don't intend to run out for a long time.

The elasto start pull cords, from Stihl, are really nice. They have a rubber shock absorbing effect that makes pulling much easier on the old joints.
It expensive, but the retro fit to other brands and types of machines is worth it.
Any of you climbers who know about starting a saw a lot of times a day, would do well to set the topping saws up with these handle/cord combinations.
Heck, I've rigged them up to just about every motorized thing I have.

Mike is right on this one !!!

I put one on a Husky 288 (no comp release) and it is a lot better on the joints!

The good thing is once you make the initial investment, the insert replacement ropes for the rubber elastostart are only about $2->2.50 each. The small version like for the 200T just uses a standard rope.

Yup, god stuff there. Got em on my dolmar 7900 & 5100, one on one of my husky 372's, another on a unnamed husky, one one my old poulan 5500 (dolmar) and a couple more kickin around for future use. Makes life easy when there are no decomps!
