Good evening, everyone! I have been looking for a 064 for quite some time know and i was finally able to find one that was in pretty good shape. I have done tons of research on these. I would apricate your guys opinion on this. I understand there was a variation of the 064 having trouble finding parts for the ignition. I believe it's the early ones without the heavy-duty AF cover. also, if someone could help me with the carb and what carb I do have and what year this could possibly be. add and few photos hope that helps. 064.jpg064 6.jpg064 3.jpg064 (2).jpg

thanks again everyone!064 4.jpg

Welcome to AS.

Not a bad looking 064. Have you pulled muffler to check P/C?

Lots of changes to 064 over the years. The first ones with one of the ignitions that tended to go had Bosch coils with rather unique mounting pattern. Some slightly later ones had 4 coil mounting bosses and would accept the newer coils too. All those can be fitted with the HD filter upgrade.

At one point they upgraded the crank and bearings.

They also changed carbs but if you pull it it should be marked.

Do you have an IPL and service manual? I have those and some other service bulletins if you want them, also a compilation of 064/066 flywheels/coils I saved that someone posted here.

I have not pulled the muffler to check the piston and cylinder yet, that was going to be a Sunday project. the saw starts and runs absolute amazing the only reason is ask about the ignition problems is for more of a preventive maintenance. if the parts are that hard to find i will start looking know so i have spares. So if it has the HD AF it will accept newer coils? i do not have an IPL or a Service Manual, if you could point me in the right direction for though things that would be a HUGE help. thanks for the help!!

HD air filter could be put on the first ones, I have one of those that came with the upgrade. If you take the coil off so we can see the mounting bosses on the case that will give an idea of how old/new it is. I can't search stuff by ser #

The attached files will get you going. The service manual is to big to attach here. Send me a PM with your email and I'll send you that too if you want.

this is super help full. it looks like i will have to pull the flywheel off also to find the party number of that as well. I will get that done on Sunday. I was able to pull the fly wheel cover and coil this morning quick. Looks like three holes total. top two were used to mount the coil and appears there Is an extra hole on the bottom side that was not used. have attached a few pics that show this.

That is the same as my saw, an early one with the 2-hole Bosch coil. Not all of those saws/coils were "dogleg". Should have the 1201 flywheel. If you have more Stihls it's worth getting the flywheel puller, ones for Puch cycles also fit.

Some of the 064 cases had 4 coil bosses on the case and will accept either style coil. There was a thread that showed that someplace?

You can make an adapter to run the newer/universal unlimited coils (@L34 did this), or if you can find a dogleg 046 coil that will fit too (@wigglesworth).

" The problem with the early 064 bosch coils is the bolt spacing on the coil. Some 064's have multiple mounting pads, but most early ones with the bosch coil do not.

You can use a 1128 000 1309 coil and use the top and bottom mounting holes if it will fit your case.

Here is a link I posted some pics in. Im too lazy to post em again."

sorry for the delay had my skidder took a crap over the weekend. Just thought I would give you an update. did a compression test got max psi of 160 cold on the forth pull. seems pretty good to me!

also per the thread I started. I removed the muffler and checked out P/C, little bit of light glaze lines. no scoring or flakes around the transfer ports.

I had the chance to final load it down in a 30" red pine with a 28" bar and full comp chain. it's really made me smile 😃. I did notice at WOT under heavy load it would kind of cut in and out very small amount. almost like it was bouncing off a rev limter. maybe a good carb clean and tuned right? I have carb kit, impulse line, fuel line, fuel filter, air filter and plug coming. all OEM.

again thanks for all the help and let me know if you see anything I should be alarmed about!
