They are both identical, although the points and flywheel are actually missing from the spare saw.

I'll rule out compression at least before focusing on timing I think. Then it's only one thing to worry about.

I'd have bought a new piston and cylinder kit already if it wasn't silly money. I can buy a new piston and rings for £15, but I haven't done it as yet. (And not because I'm terrified of losing those big end roller bearings again)

I'll have to check tomorrow, it's out in the garage but it's definitely the one that was used with points. I've messaged the ignition module seller to see if they have any info on whether timing needs to be adjusted.

I hope it's not compression because if it needs a new barrel and piston, this saw is pretty much scrap.

Yes, I think so. I think I kept them, so they'll be sat in the garage somewhere.

That's very similar in appearance to the cheap one. I.e it grounds via the case. Mine has a spade connector for the trigger wire though, but largely looks the same.

Quick update. Tested compression with the replacement piston. 105psi. Added a smidge of heavy oil, I stopped counting at 155psi.

So that seems like the problem. Then I kept pulling over to clear the oil. There was a mechanical sounding clunk, now it has 60psi.

I guess it snapped a ring. I'll disassemble this evening.

Any idea if any other barrel and pistons fit? Replacement 010 ones cost much more than this saw is worth.

Well, that's what caused the compression to drop. Found a big end roller bearing loose in there. I guess it can't quite have seated correctly on reassembly.

Luckily I have a spare barrel and piston but it looks like both have questionable compression.

So now the question is, is this saw worth spending money on a piston and cylinder kit?

My spare cylinder needs a bloody good clean up, but looks score free at least. Then I can keep costs to just a new piston at £15.

So since my last post I obtained a new barrel and piston (from a used, but running saw)

They were in good visual order, I fitted both, the piston had two piston rings which seems like it can only be a benefit.

The barrel however did not fit, at all. It seems there is some variation in models.

So I fitted my spare barrel after a clean up. There's no visual scoring etc.

I'm still only getting 90psi compression. I find it fishy this value has remained unchanged. Even though I've tried different pistons and barrels in various combinations.

It still won't start but did attempt to fire (once). Fuel is getting through because it comes out of the exhaust eventually.

So I'm starting to suspect the reed valve...potentially not sealing and failing at 90psi?

Either that, or I'm back to suspecting timing.

I'm so close to finding another set of points and refitting them to rule out this electronic ignition system.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated. I bought a Husqvarna 268XP recently and I don't want to become a team Husqvarna garage! Not completely anyway.

Do you or a friend have another running saw you can try your compression gauge on to see if it's close to accurate?

If the points are not totally pitted you can file them with a flexstone or some emery cloth. Timing may be off a bit but should be close enough to run if you have compression. Note that filing points opens up the gap and effects/advances timing, but old points usually have worn block that follows the cam on the crank and the wear ******* timing
 
I'll have to do some research on how that's done. But crank seals are doable. I'd rather not, but I will if I need to. Just want to diagnose the dang problem now!
