Hi and good morning to all

I have a old Stihl 018 chainsaw that I have just rebuilt , there is 3 things that I would like to find out if possible , 1st what type of Chain Oil can I use apart from original Stihl Oil , ie can I use my Car oil 5/30 fully synthetic or semi synthetic or just good old mineral multigrade .

2nd When I assembled the Oil tank and fit the new tube into it , where exactly is the tube end to lay , I ask the question because the tank has a lower part where the tube goes into it then it steps up to where the filler cap area is , if I just put it in it will go up over the step and into the stepped up area where you can see the end ( filter ) , I have sort of fit it so it lays in the bottom of the lower part of the tank , but it ha had to be bent a little to get it all into that lower part of the tank !!! .

3rd What type of oil can I use for the 2 stroke mix , apart from Original Stihl 2 stroke oil , ie can I do the 50-1 mix using the chain oil ! .

cheers and thank you all for any help forthcoming .PS: I hope that I have explained it clear enough .

As far as bar and chain oil that's what I would use for lubrication on the bar and chain. Doesn't have to be stihl brand bar and chain oil. As far as using bar and chain oil to mix with gas there's no way I would even think about that as long as your oil pickup tube is not kinked or something it should pick up you oil fine as far as mixing oil I use stihl hp ultra in the silver bottle at 50:1 it works well for me but many others use different kinds I guess it's a personal preference

Hi there ky044

Thanks for your reply , yes you are correct it is best to use a good brand 2 stroke oil , I was just going back to my old 2 stroke motor bike days when we use to mix our own 2 stroke using ordinary car engine oil at a mix of 25-1 .

cheers and thanks
ps: just out of curiosity what time is it over there , I am in England .

In kentucky where I live 3:35 am and check this after while others will chime In and will be more helpful I'm not that smart about chainsaws I learn something new every time I log on here but like I said others will be on here soon and they have much better advice

l love posts like this........they are entertaining!lol. Well l would recommend bar and chain oil for your bar and chain. That goes in the tank closest to the bar and chain toward the front of the saw...Now for your 50:1 mix definately DO NOT use the bar & chain oil as that is a really bad idea. Use proper 2 cycle/2 stroke oil and mix it with standard unleaded petrol at 50:1. Thats 50 parts petrol to 1 part two-cycle oil and that goes in the tank closest to the handle. Your oil filter should fall into place according to how the saw is held so it picks up oil in all positions. Good luck & stay safe. l would reccomend some PPE (personal protective equiptment).
