Greetings all! Been lurking for a while, and seem to have a caught a touch of CAD. I have a couple other saws, so no panic to get er goin. I picked it up hoping it would be good for little clean ups and limbing.

As it came to me, the little 024 is pretty beat. Intact, runs (barely idles, loads up if run full throttle). I'm posting this from a phone, so no pics yet. Anyway, it's oozing oil out of the muffler, and appears to have been running quite rich for some time.

So far from what I can see, it leaks mix around the fuel cap (no seal or o-ring), missing bottom screw from the felling dog, bar is shot (blued, huge wear marks), chain worn out, and the sprocket is marginal. Also, one of the bar studs appears to have been cross threaded. Oh yeah, and the plastic housing above the muffler has a small melted part. Aside from that, she's a cream puff ;)

Since every millimeter of it is oozing or spewing oil or mix, some clean up seems like a good place to start. After pulling the muffler, at least the p&c seem to be good. Swimming in oil, but shiny. Muffler was pretty caked up.

I'm posting this hoping for some guidance. Sound like a worthwhile project, or is it better off as a parts donor? I'm not looking for a hot saw project, just want a lightweight for little stuff. Ain't gotta be pretty.

If it matters, I picked it up doing some horse trading. Cost me nothing, actually got paid to take it +$40. The tools I traded were given to me. Any outcome is a win.

There's nothing better than a smartphone for posting to forums. It has a camera, GPS, photobucket, and Internet all in one package. Congrats on the new to you '24! I have one too, but I'm not quite as excited about it as you. Mine is old, so no outboard chain tensioner, and the fuel tank vent sucks, but it runs good. It's a decent saw model that makes me really want a MS261 or better yet a MS241CM!

Photobucket @$&#ed up for Iphone.

Apparently the latest update doesn't work. App won't even open. Several other reviews say the same thing. I can post some pics from the pc if needed later.

Will the 16"bar from a ms290 work? I have one in my box o bars I think. I know it has a 16" on it now, have to dig em out & see. If it works, should have a .325 chain to match. Yeah, sure it would cut faster with a 14", but I ain't in a hurry, and My back prefers to stay a bit more upright. I'll trade a little chain speed for a bit more reach.

Btw, yours looks new in comparison. Still even has some paint on the bar... Fancy.

Without pics, it never happened!

Lol, you're killing me. I came here because my saw didn't work. Now I'm trying to post pics from my phone. For tonight, you'll just have to imagine what yours would look like if it was chained to a truck and dragged down a road a bit. Well maybe not that bad, but nowhere near as clean as yours.

Good saws IMO. Have owned several and for a 41cc saw have decient power if you stay with a 16" bar/.325 chain. If P/C is good very inexpensive to restore . Chain brake work?

According to your verbal description, most of those damaged parts are easy to get from your local dealer. Probably just over a hundred bucks. Last week I put new gaskets on my caps, and a fuel vent valve: eight bucks.

I'll have to check the chain brake tomorrow. I was more concerned with getting the chain moving than trying to stop it.

Piston & cylinder looked fine. I've never seen a more abused bar before though. I have no idea how the chain even travels around it. Running so poor I didn't bother sticking it in wood.

If $100 or so puts it together, I'll be happy.

Understand about wanting to get it running good first, and if interested I might have parts I could give you. PM me if you need any powerhead "hardparts".

Thanks John! I really appreciate the offer. May take you up on that if local parts get crazy or unavailable.

I wasn't being a wise guy. I'd noted (in my head) that the brake seemed intact. Initially the chain was moving even at idle, I was concerned that the clutch may be bad. Half a turn brought the idle down enough to let the clutch disengage. So far, I don't see any deal breakers on this one.

muffler burning top cover on my 024

not to highjack but i installed a used top cover on my 024 and used it to buck up a 16-18" black oak and the muffler melted the cover fairly good. is this normal? maybe i should only use it to limb??

A carb kit is pretty cheap. They tend to need fuel and impulse lines as well. You might as well replace those while you are in there.

That bad doesn't look that bad in your pic, but it's a little hard to tell how the rails are. I think a MS290 bar will work since the chains are the same. A quick browse of the Stihl site should tell you for sure.

Check the fuel vent while you are in there. Mine was plugged and causing problems at higher RPM's

They are a great little saw, and I find that I use mine quite a bit now that it's in reasonable working order.

Make sure you get the flat gas cap gasket, they made those with a flippy cap o-ring as well. The dealer ordered the wrong one, so I still have to get one for mine still.

there are a lovely saw
my one started firing petrol out the exhaust after cleaning the carburettor . it had cracked gasket on the metering side of the carb a little bit of gasket sealer for a quick fix until I get a kit

if it is melting the cover the heat shield might be gone you can buy a role in a motor factors that just sticks on. hasn't happened on my 024 but the 038 has burnt the cover

The heat shield is still on mine. I would bet it happens when they're running way too rich. Excess fuel & oil burning off in the muffler.

While cleaning it up, I pulled a red wire nut out of the bottom of the saw. At first I wondered what strange set of circumstances had come together to lodge a wire nut so perfectly (and surprisingly tough to remove) into the gap. Took me a bit to realize it had been used as a makeshift repair to a broken rubber A/V mount. Without the wire nut it flops around. With it in it was snug. Sneaky trick. Never crossed my mind. What is involved with changing out the front bottom A/V bushing? Is it recommended to change them all, or should I just replace the split one? Or... Should I find that big red wire nut and put it back;)

Fuel line is brand new, as is the plug. Impulse line is original I'm sure, so I guess it's not a bad idea to go ahead and do that with the carb kit.

My pics really don't show how rough it looks. Must have stumbled onto the way folks take pics for CL. That bar is ugly. The rails were about 1/8" off. On both sides of the bar. With huge waves worn in. I cleaned it up some with a grinder, then leveled it out a bit better with a file. It's still pretty bad, but it'll do till its running right and deserves better. Crazy thing (to me) as burnt up as the bar is (on both sides) the oiler seems to work fine.
