It appears to be the concensus that modifying the muffler helps significantly with 026's.

It's also been suggested that this mod tends to lean out the saw slightly.

Will this leaning out require re-jetting the fixed jet carbs on the latter model saws or is this mod within the range of Stihl's fixed high speed jet? (both my 026's have fixed high speed jets)

I use my ears. I guess I'm lucky in that I seem to be able to tell if a 2-cycle engine is running right by the sound.

I guess it comes from running them all my life, started my lawn business at the age of 12. My dad financed my first lawnmower purchase.

It should sound more like a 4 cycle out of the wood. When it starts cutting, it will smooth out and sound like a 2 cycle. Alittle blubber out of the wood at full throttle.

rejetting carbs

Hello Dave,
What we usually do when working on a saw with a fixed high speed jet is to run the saw after the mods are done and if we think its on the lean side we enrichen the low side . the low side contributes 30% of the fuel at high speed so if we turn the low side out a little bit and if the saw runs better, cuts faster, we go into the wet side and enlarge the pickup jet size .002-.003. it can make a big difference on cutting speed if it was too lean. had a 3120 a month ago that would not cut fast stock or modified. It has a fixed high speed jet

also. Removed the carb and removed the pickup jet, it was .041 thousands. drilled it out to .044. the saw was cutting 17.35 seconds in a 26 1nch log . after drilling out the jet it dropped to12.12 so if the jetting is off it will make a substancial difference. this saw also cut very slow stock. somewhere in the mid 20's seconds
