Are there any visual clues to tell the difference between these two. I just picked up a stihl without any top covers and any model badging. I believe it's a 028, but hoping it's a 028s. The idle adjustment screw is on the top of the air cleaner assembly, mag case, spur sprocket. Looking at it quick I couldn't find an ID tags anywhere..where would they normally put the ID tag? thanks in advance.

ID tags on the 028 were on the engine cover. The serial numbers are on the flat spot on the right side of the muffler between the muffler and clutch cover. Only real method to tell for sure what you have is to pull the muffler off and measaure the bore.

look at piston thru spark plug hole, if it has a dome/pop-up on it 99.99% of the times it is a super....unless it is a av/woods-boss with a after market jug-n-slug.

Thanks for the quick replies

serial # 217 272 987

piston looks to be flat topped, measuring would be difficult as the exhaust port is on an angle relative to the bore..i.e. I don't think I could get an accurate reading. here are some pics.

Take something soft, like a piece of box board (cereal, pasta, etc), cut a strip. Put it through the exhaust port to the far side of cylinder (across center of bore), turn crank to get the piston to make a mark on your measure strip. With draw strip and measure. Have used stiff paper and leather too. Easy-peasy.

My guess is WB.......but that's purely a guess.:monkey:

Good method to measure bore width is to insert a drinking straw or coffee plastic stir stick through the exhaust port all the way across the bore to the back wall, gently pull up on the recoil until the piston contacts the straw. The straw will be marked, withdraw the straw and measure the length from the mark to the end. That will give you the bore.

another great idea......I didn't have any straws handy so I used one of those long fireplace wood matches, worked good. I guesstimate the bore is a solid 46mm

hard to tell, but it looks flat to me. I was hoping I could get a definitive answer from the serial #

My 028 is a "Woodboss AV Super"......I have no idea what vintage that would be??

I have tried to see the dome on the top of the piston in a few 028's, and with carbon on top it's almost impossible to tell if that dome is there or not.

Here is a pict of my Super Wood Boss.

I have one of the later Super WBs as well........definitely one of the later editions. I think they brought back the "WoodBoss" designation for marketing purposes, remember mine had the WB dude sticker on the clutch cover........no longer though. He looked a little French-Canadian to me......:chainsaw:

Have four 028S's, one has the Super WoodBoss AV badge ("newest"), one Super AV but had a WoodBoss sticker on the side and two just plain ole Supers.

I have an older 028 woodboss I borrowed the carb from to put on a later woodboss super. The older unit had a tillotson carb and the newer super had a walbro carb originally. I believe its older 028 that have mufflers with mounting screws on the sides of the muffler also as my older wood boss does.

Serial numbers don`t tell much on Stihl chainsaws. Only way it tells anything really was if it was registered with Stihl during the sale when new.
