I'm looking to pick up a saw (my first) and there's an Stihl 028av super on Craiglist for $275. I did a bit of research on the saw and it seems to be fairly popular. Does that price sound good? Would you recommend this as a decent all around beginner saw?

It's all about the condition of the saw. They are getting older, built in late 80's at best. It should be pretty nice for that price. What size wood will you be taking on?
I want something I can limb trees with (4-8") and maybe work down trunks to a point (12-14").

Keep your eyes on the local classifieds, Craigslist, and the Facebook swap and shop sites. Good finds are to be had there. As long as you're watching them constantly. Picked up this 038 Super the other day for $150. It's like new yet.IMG_20151206_103247129.jpg

The 028 Super is an excellent firewood saw. I sold one about a year ago for $275 but it was in very good condition. I would say the "average" price for these is about $200 give or take $50 depending on the condition of the saw and bar.

Actually, I have that 028S back now as the guy traded it for a larger saw) He used it very little as he did most of his cutting with an 039. (he bought another one of those from me) I used it on one tree job so far but I'll probably just sell it again...

An 028 would be fine for that size wood. There are going to be lighter saws with the same displacement and bigger displacement saws that weigh the same. They are fairly simple and the parts supply is pretty good, especially used. There are some threads on here of ground up rebuilds. I would say if it looks beat in any way, keep looking. If it looks pretty clean and obviously not been used much then it may warrant consideration. The Super will always be worth more than the straight wood boss (bigger engine). Hold it up by the starter cord, if it falls it may be whipped......

If your set on this model,

I have a ported one I'll sell ya at my cost of $200 pho.

Pulling around 180psi.

Timing advance, muff mod, blah blah blah...

It's clean. New rings and a 46mm super. All OEM.

Darn thing won't hold tune though. I have to vac test it and make it right before it's sold. Carb rebuilt, twice.

Won't hold a tune? That's notorious for a vintage 028. Even weather conditions make a difference. My solution is to leave the carb hi/lo settings alone and when the weather changes, adjust the idle only, which is really easy on these carbs. So, I keep a small screwdriver handy. Piece of cake.

BTW, $200 is a bargain for that saw. I got mine at an auction, had no idea what to expect, and the folks at the auction had no idea what the saw was worth.

I'm going to see what the guy will take for the local one first, then if it doesn't work out I'll try one of those two. Thanks for all the help everyone.
