I've got this chainsaw, no manuals and little experience. I can get it started by squirting gas directly into the carburetor, but as soon as that runs out it cuts off. So it seems I have a gas delivery problem. Can someone suggest a source for a repair manual, or give me some clues on how to attack this problem?

Thanks
John

Go buy a carb kit and also check the fuel line.

It isn't ignition and it isn't compression, so it is fuel related, specifically fuel delivery.

What make of carb is it?

I might have a carb manual for it that I can send you.

Okay, I think it's a Tillotson HU series.

Check my recent posts, like yesterday, I posted the HU manual in another thread.

MAJOR REPAIR KIT: RK-14HU
MINOR REPAIR KIT: DG-2HU

Hey there, I also have a 031 that I recently got running. First check your fuel pickup inside the tank. Make sure the screens are clean. It comes apart, so make sure the inside screen is clean also. After that check the gas lines for cracks or holes. Lastly, make sure the impulse line coming off of the carb is in good shape and is attached well. Mine is running pretty good now after checking or changing those parts. Have fun.

Thanks for the replies. I'll check out the tank and lines and if that does not do it look into a carb kit. I did not find a name on the carb but have not pulle dit out to look closely. I'll do that when I get to that stage.

I own a 031AV as well............really nice reliable saw! Yeah I agree with the other posters:

1.check tank filter
2.check fuel line
3. check impulse line
4. get a carb kit (if it needs it)
5. use only fresh mix fuel

Hope your 031 starts to work for you! Those are great saws that last!

well said, the fuel lines on these dry out and crack, creating a situation where you can't always see the fuel leaking, but it is drawing air instead of fuel. Impulse lines also tend to be shot on these older saws. I had 2 of these, down to one now, great saws for the size.
