Hi Looking for anti vibe lower handle mounts for this saw. I also have a question. When this saw is running, the clutch housing gives a little ting ting, something is hitting it. Does this mean I need new clutch shoes? Thanks

Do you need the mounts that are at the rear of the handle [ 1 on each side with a bolt and nut. ] Or the mount that goes on the left hand side of the tubular handle and attaches in front of the rewind housing. I may have either one of them let me know.

Hi Dave. I need for sure the mounts on the lower handle next to the case, one on each side. It probably wouldn't hurt to have the front one for the handle that you mentioned as well. Let me know if you have them. Thanks

Are you saying that something is actually hitting the clutch cover?Do you see a mark? I really doubt this. Or are you hearing a tapping/rattling noise? Maybe you need new springs. Also, a new bearing perhaps. If the drum is loose enough on the shaft it'll sort of ring like a mini-bell. You would need new shoes if the old ones were broken or slipping too much.

Yes it is making a ringing like sound like a small bell. If the drum is loose can it be tighted? Or does that mean something needs to be replaced in order for it to be tight, like a bearing???

I guess I wasn't clear enough. Check the sprocket bearing. The drum should not wobble much on the shaft. Also, the springs hold the shoes tight to spider. If you can easily wiggle a shoe loose, time for springs.

The first saw I bought 'new' was an 031 in 1969. I used it for years and years and loved it. Great saw for its time! After I got an 024, I rarely used the 031 because of the great difference in weight. I finally traded it in (with an 051, 'even') to a Stihl dealer for a new 038. The dealer was anxious to get it. I only mention all that to say that it was in great shape after all those years and all those trees.

Anyway, I know the sound you are talking about. I had forgotten about that little bell that rang when I set it down for a second and let it idle. A light bell just every now and then. My 031 always did it. It made that sound from the first time I cranked it. It has to be in the clutch against the housing but I was never concerned with it. It couldn't have been detrimental to the saw as I never noticed any unusual wear in the clutch. All I ever did was replace bars and sprockets.

I bet that saw is still running strong.

Enjoy the bell!

Thanks for the comments cb, I'll check into it to see if I can tell if anything is wrong. Buckduck, yes it is still a strong running saw from what I can tell. I just got it the other day and haven't had much time to fool with it. It needs a new bar and chain and then we will get to cutting. Thanks guys.

little bell inmy head

i know the ringing you are talking about. i have a husky 55 that has done it since the day i baught it. im not sure what it is but it doesnt seem to hurt anything. at least now i know im not hearing things!

I've heard it before too, but not recently.  On the chance it's the clutch drum ringing (like, what else could it be?), try putting an extra bit of tension on the chain.  Not necessarily to use it that way, but to see if it snubs the drum enough to quell the bell.
