I am new here and to Stihl chainsaws. I received this saw from my wife's uncle recently and I was hoping to get some history on the saw. I called Stihl directly today and they state that their database does not have serial number data dating before 1993. Are there other resources out there regarding to sale level data on a saw based on serial number?

The saw is a Stihl 034 AV Super. Serial number 222836974.

If you get a copy of the IPL for the 034 AV, you may be able to find the vintage of the saw based on serial numbers and dates of the changes made to the saw.

Here's your serial # 2 22 836 974: The first number "2" indicates it's made in USA. That's the "X" in the
serial number listed below

From the 034 IPL, this is what I found:

from Page K: 10 ✻ 1125 790 9902 1 Annular buffer ⇥ X 14 000 463 (39.84)
Page H: ✻ 1125 007 1025 1 Rope rotor kit/Pawl (B) ⇥ X 16 523 020 (16.88)
Page R: 16 ✻ 9099 021 1760 1 Self-tapping screw 2.9x9.5 ⇥ X 19 332 484 (11.89)
Page H: 22 ✻ 1125 195 7200 1 Pawl ⇥ X 22 990 085 (02.91)
Page H: 21 ✻ 0000 790 6100 1 Screw assy. M4 ⇥ X 25 648 043 (11.92)
3 ✻ 1125 122 6600 2 Collar screw ⇥ X 32 622 639 (30.95)

Based on the above data, your saw appears to be 1991 - 1992 vintage.

Does this help? I found out the 028AVS I recently got was built in the late 1980's, based on the information I got from the 028 IPL!

That is very helpful and a real clever way to look at it. Thank you for the insight.

Great way of finding out info now the 'workshoppist' site is down! Thanks :)
Guess my 034 is from 1989 or 1990.

What do you mean, exactly? My 034 has s/n 120012111. The 2004 Stihl ipl shows these parts, the saw has #21:

Changes were made in '95 and 2000:

So, unless I'm mistaken, the tank vent version doesn't help me that much to narrow down the year of production...?
