I've got tons of oil leaking behind my clutch and so I pulled the side apart. On the center of the oiler there's a nylon insert that has a piece of metal wrapped around it. Does this metal "spring" get tied down somewhere or does it spin with the clutch? Mine looks like it was rubbing the brake or case because the tip is worn. Why is it needed at all?

Thanks for any help

A notch in your sprocket turns this metal "spring", and in turn , moves the nylon piece, so the oiler only works when the chain is turning. Pull this n ylon piece out, and you will see the "worm" gear, and view how the oiler works.

Thanks Fish,

The very tip of my spring sheared off and wasn't sitting in the groove of the sprocket. Therefore I wasn't getting any oil to the bar and it was all leaking into the clutch cavity.

I'll see if Stihl sells the replacement parts or take a look on ebay.

The spring is available cheaply from Stihl dealers... but also check your oil hose... Even if the spring didn't contact the drum there should be no excess oil in the clutch cavity... Often a bad clutch drum bearing lets the drum wobble, breaking the spring tip, cutting the oil exit hose or worse - gouging out the pump body.

You are getting the smack from two of the best on this board if you have a stihil dealer nearby he should have everything you need....

You guys are correct. It looks like the bearing is bad and possibly the hose got taken out during the mahem.

Looks like I need more parts than I though but the rest of the saw is O.K. so I think I should fix it up.

Thanks for the tip.

If your drum wobbles you need a new drum - the bearing alonge won't fix the problem. Get the UPGRADED drum version with the big bearing (same type of bearing as the MS440 and MS360) - part number 1125 007 1041

The Factory hose is a PITA to fit... The hose kit will come with enough for two tries, but be careful. The IPL tells you the exact length to cut it.
I a pinch I've used Stihl fuel hose, but put the oil hose kit coil spring inside of it.

Stihl 036

I'm going to need a clutch and drum for an 036 a nieghbor gave to me, would that same part number fit an 036? Any other updates or suggestions would be appreciated.

That spring that goes around the nylon gear is a PITA to replace. Buy the whole unit..............nylon gear and spring!!!

Sorry... when you know how it's dead easy... (and $10 cheaper) - you just "wrap" it around"... far end inserted first. Yep, I did fight with my few couple though, but it really is easy...
