well, i really hurt my thumb on an extension ladder so i have some time to clean up and do some work on my saws. i was working on a low hour 038 av super and it had the same problem as this 038 avs farmsaw. when i took the inside cover off to check things out the oil pump plug rolled out. thats 2 plugs rolling out in a week. i'm thinking this comes off from excessive vibrations or a blast of air in the oiler hole maybe. ( sitting on cement probably). this must be preety common and will be the first thing i look for if and when i get another stihl. i bought this as a spare parts saw, but i keep getting the urge to get parts to get it running.i 've got a good piston, do you think i could get a good used cylinder and some new rings and make this work?

that explains it

Maybe this is why my Dad's 038AVS leaks oil like crazy. It pumps the oil just fine, but seems to leak a lot out of the cover. What's the fix for the oil leak? Do you just need a new pump, or is the plug replaceable and if so, any way to get it to stay put?

i just cleaned it up and put the plug back in. it's kinda tricky but easy. i had thoughts of fabbing up something to put in there between the plug and case.
