I've ran both, and owned an 038 for about 15 years. Great saw, built like a tank, but too heavy for my liking, at least based on the power output. As mentioned they have plenty of "grunt". Handled a 24" bar pretty easily, a 20" bar would have been better, but I have smaller/faster saws that are much lighter, so the 038 spent most of it's time here on the shelf.

The only real negatives I could tag on the 038's aside from weight would be fuel consumption and the goofy choke/kill switch, never did get completely comfortable with it.

I ran the 372XP on several occassions, and 268/272XP's. They are all fast saws with excellent power to weight ratios. I'd choose any of them over an 038. The 372XP is the cream of the crop for the Husky saws in that weight/engine size/power output, but don't pass up a nice 268 or 272XP, they aren't far behind it......Cliff

keep me in mind when you clean out the shed!

See what I mean Volk, will he part with one or will he hang onto em, we shall see. Hell if I had a few of em I'd give ya one. I gave away a 361 to my brother the other nite, a 056 to Hoss yesterday. I think Homie should give you one of those 038's myself, ya listening Homie,LOL

Yeah the 038 and 028 guys are like a cult- shrouded in mystery, keep to themselves, and always doing irrational things.

No kidding, I don't understand those guys at all. Some of the 038's and 028's I see are ready for that place in saw heaven, beat and worn to hell. Not so according to the owners, don't care what it costs, getter running and call me. I've never seen any cult like it other than maybe Harley-Davidson.

quit giving all the good stuff away!!! untill i come around next time.:)

heck, i might drive up there to get it.:dizzy:

i been known to drive for a saw eh, mr.hall?

I know you will drive a helluva longs ways to get one repaired.

Boys at Stihl couldn't beleive you would drive that far to have ole Daddy tear your saw apart,LOLOLOLOL They said isn't there a dealer close to him, I said yeah, plenty, but he wanted me to get my hands in that saw. They thought dayummmmmm, hahha

Awww hell only a saw. Sometimes I giveth and sometimes I recieveth. Example of what I'm talking about. I've given many many saws away but in the same token I've had many many given to me as well.

Alot of folks refuse to put a penny in a saw. They bring in a saw burnt up and I tellem the cost of parts and they go nope, I'll get a new one. I set em up and they head out the door with their new saw and I go hey, what about this other saw of yours, they go keep it. I've gotton alot of saws that way so I figure what the hell, I give some away, some I keep...

am i too forward?

i guess i'll just ask!:)
so you wanna give that magII a fine new home down on the coast? it can sit and watch the sun set over the chesapeake. thicker air down here at sea level, saw will breath easier. nice warm garage for it to sleep in....

If I had a shed full like Homie I certainly would give you one. I only have that one fine 038. If I come across another one I'll give ya shout,

i wouldn't take it for free anyways. not my style. but it was worth a shot to see if you would part with that 'cherry' machine. can you blame a guy? look at that saw!

in the mean time i can still keep an eye open for a 372.

Ya got any 038's in real good shape Homie, Volk may buy one from ya, hell your not gonna use em anymore, sell him one on the cheap,

No I can't do that champ. I'm keeping all my saws, Even my 1st saw[1974] Jonsered 621.Biggest loss is not having the Jonsered "silver top"80, check it out on Mike Acres saw site,my most favorite saw, now there is a tank of a saw and still only 16 lbs and 80cc.But I will get one again someday. When I retire from my arborist business[70 yrs old] I will restore and polish those old gems. Yes Stihl 038 and the many other Stihls were very good saws to me and still are, reliability was their biggest asset, the 372 just feels real nice on my hands, when the 441 or ? gets a little better I will run that too.

Well as much as I wanna call ya an ole tight azz I do understand where ya coming from there. When you have the tools of your life's work to look back on in your golden years it is nice. I know many mechanics that save old scredrivers and wrenchs and such for that reason alone so I don't fault ya at all Homie.

You will have one hell of a drive volks, I'm 12 hr drive north of the North Dakota border and from looking at the map you would have about another 3-4 days of driving to get to North Dakota.

Same to ya. Back in the summer we were duking it out pretty good wasn't we Homie, LOLOLOL Awwwwwww the good ole days. I done forgot what we was fussing about but I know if we was fussing it was fun,LOL

Hows business up there Homie? Seems everything in the states has slowed down a awful lot. Where I work Stihl sales have been great this year but man, the rest of the place, big lumber and hardware outfit, sales have come to a crawl.

Yes we had some good battles,I gotta say I only started using a computer last year[last of the diehard woodcutters] so it was hard for me to understand computer etiquette expressing myself.LOL.

Best year ever, job sales still climbing every year. Expect 2009 to drop a little . When the US ecomony suffers we usually go through a lag and affects us the year after. Surprising in our Manitoba capital city housing prices are still climbing. Forestry is still going strong here, our lumber mill is down to one shift but the pulp/paper mill can't produce it fast enough.Mining here is getting lower nickel, zinc, copper prices after years of record prices but they are still going strong. Something has to give in 2009.
