Good morning and happy new year! I’m in the middle of my first complete tear down and rebuild and I’ve come across the dreaded where does this part go?

Long story short a friend dropped this saw off about two years ago, after some evaluation the crank bearing exploded and ultimately the engine was shot. I put it on the workbench and he bought a new saw. I picked up a new engine for it recently and have it mostly back together, the problem is I can’t figure out where this retaining ring goes, any ideas? I’ve searched high and low on the interweb and can’t find a parts microfiche for the 039 and can’t seem to place it in the repair manual. Any help is much appreciated.

I’ve been wondering that all along too, shame on me for not having a cleaner workbench!

Just finished putting an MS390 engine into an MS290. (same saw as the 390). There are no internal snap rings in this saw. That snap ring is from something else! You should be good to go if that is the only part you had left over!!!

A common prank in larger shops is to toss in an extra "part" in the box a tech has put the parts of a tore down unit in.
For when he puts the thing back together.

Thanks everyone for your input, it’s a little embarrassing that it was from something else but it’s better to ask than assume. I almost have it back together, just need to install the handle and wrap up the clutch side. I’ll report back when it’s done!
