Set them about .015. Then time it. Take off the fanwheel and you will find a mark on the flwheel and case. Points shpuld just open when marks line up. Use an ohmmeter on the 200 scale, the needle works the best.

Aaron, your 041 was made from 1967 to 1977. It displaces 61cc's and develops 5.5 hp @ 7000 RPMs. The 041 is a great saw. As far as the 36 inch bar, I'm not to sure its got the nut to turn that much chain at a satisfactory speed especially under a load. The 20" bar with 3/8 chain is the most common bar chain combo found on your saw.

Harry,
I've run a 28" bar on my 041 Super AV for the past thirty years, it works just fine. It saves my back a lot when I've dropped a tree and need to limb it and buck it up. The puppy still runs pretty good although as of late it needs a rebuild on the oil pump and maybe looking into the piston rings. The only thing I've ever had done to it is replace the electronic ignition about ten years ago.

We don't have hardwoods out here on the coast, sure there is the occasional black walnut but mostly I drop alder, silver maple or birch (this week) and a lot of pine and fir. Back when I was a kid it was nothing for me to walk up to a 40-60 inch tree and attack it like I knew what I was doing. There were tens of thousands of acres of 'dead-but-standing' black pine in the forests around Walla Walla and I had chosen the profession of firewood specialist . . a back breaking ten cords (cut and stacked) a week.

Enough reminiscing . . this saw has seen me through years of good service and I am hoping to coax another five or ten out of it before it finally gives up. My biggest hassle has been finding replacement parts, like o-rings and mufflers, for it over the years.

If you know of any chain saw shops that still have these parts, or can track them down, I would sure appreciate the heads up.

Take care,
Mark

Mark, are you running full skip or full comp chain on that saw? I have a lot of hardwoods here and the similar sized, but probably detuned MS390(64cc) is plenty of saw with a 25" bar or 16" bow with comp chain. I had a 28" on it when new, but it was too slow and I was afraid I might burn it out prematurely. If I had run skip on it square chisel and mostly softwood, I would have kepth the 28", but 36"? I doubt it.... that would be a lot for an 038 Mag or 044
