Hello all, just new here. My father in law died and I inherited his stihl 042 chainsaw electronic ignition. I cannot get a spark from it. disconnected all ground wires for the shut off switch and still none. I have fond memories of watching him use this to cut holes in the ice. He used to use cooking oil for the chain lube. It is kind of embedded in spots all over case which might be the culprit. Cannot seem to find anything about a replacement coil online. Any hints to what why or where. Thanks......

After you check those threads out ask your local stihl dealer but before you go replacing a coil pack change the spark plug.It happens.

Thanks for the quick responses guys, here is another question about this coil that I have for you. It is an electronic ignition and so Im thinking that there is a mag contact that breaks the circuit when the flywheel mag goes by. Shouldnt I be able to meter the break when I apply a magnet to the coil surface????

magnet

On the flywheel there are two permanent embedded magnets which I thought would open a set of contacts in circuit with the coil to bring on the high voltage gap jump for the plug. I do see however that the thyristor in circuit with the post quoted before does this through its gate.

Even if you understood how that coil works, for all intents and purposes it is non repairable. Those things are encapsulated in an epoxy mixture which makes their disassembley impossible under normal conditions.

I have the complete theory of operation on how that ignition circutry works plus a pretty good background in advanced electronics which does me no good at all when it comes to repairing these things.Sad to say,it's broke but you can't fix it.:(

042 chainsaw

I have a really nice looking Stihl 042 for sale, it is $300. If you have any interest, or I would part out if you want just the coil for $100 plus shipping, I was told the coils new, if you can find them are $140. Sorry no other coils at the moment, only in a good running saw, but will part out if you want, my email is [email protected] thanks Dave.
