Hi guys I just have a simple question. Does the 10mm 044 have a special crankcase? Can I use any 044 crankcase for a 10mm crank?

Thanks!

I think 10mm 044 crankcases are different than 12mm crankcases, but they are still interchangeable. I think the case ear near the muffler looked different or something like that, but I don't think there are any issues with putting a 12mm crank and top end in 10mm cases, and vice versa.

You can use any 10mm case with any 10mm crank. You cannot use a 12mm crank in a 10 mm case, the big end bearing will hit the bottom of the case. Like in the picture.

The flywheel side of the case will help determine whether you have a 10 or 12 mm case. In the picture below I have a 10mm 044

This is the section you want to look at to make sure. I don’t have any pictures of 12mm cases and I hear the 046 case is even so similar you have to keep an eye open for them.

What's up with the case you have?

The upper inside dog mounting by the muffler is broken and almost every bolt is stripped. Usually I’d tap the bolts out to a 6mm and lock tight them but I’d like to do this saw up nice.

I bought my 044 from a guy and it was exactly that, beat up, holes stripped, wrong screws, drilled and tapped to far and got into the crank. So I found a case on EBay for $50. That’s how I found out the crank was a 12mm inside a 10mm case.

Ahhh it seem like this is a common thing then lol. I’ve already stripped my down and it’s a 10mm crank for sure. The crank is beautiful tho looks almost brand new. I’ve been looking on eBay but I can’t seem to find and that are a 10mm

I’ll have a new 10mm 044 crank for sale soon. As in new oem out of a NIB10mm 044.

You certainly can fit a 12mm crank in a 10mm case. You need to tie up the space between the rod and crank throws to avoid contamination with metal, and then use a belt sander to smooth the bottom of the 12mm rod. You have to sand perpendicular to the crank axis to avoid any stress risers. The result I’d a saw with less case volume which makes it definitely zippier.

I‘ll try to find pics, but I still have a video of a 12 in 10 build for a hybrid 044/6. You need to check clearance when done.

All it takes. If you take a good look at a 10 vs 12mm crank you’ll see that the large rod end is machined on the 10mm crank and as cast/forged on the 12. The 12 has a central peak on it.
