Well I found this forum looking for advice on fixing my poulan, and after spending many hours on here I am still going to fix my poulan but also looking at new saws. Think this site is bad for saw lovers!

What is the difference between a 045AV and a 045 super? I am looking at getting a 045av and was doing some research and came across the 045 super but couldn't find anything that says the difference. I'm assuming the 045 super is superior in some way but not sure. Also what is a fair price for a 045av that runs but looks a little rough?

Thanks, Scott

The 045 Super has a bigger bore and therefore displacement. check out this site:http://www.acresinternet.com/cscc.nsf/ed1d619968136da688256af40002b8f7/66270224d319be9788256ba20048b397?OpenDocument

I think different people will give you different value of a good running 045. I'd say $150-225 depending on just how beat up it is... and what size/shape the bar and chain are too! They're pretty powerful saws- just getting hard as heck to find parts for them.

Thank you for such a quick reply. I kind of thought it might be a bigger or "super" saw. What is the biggest bar a 045av will turn, or what is the recomended range of bars it will run?

Thanks, scott

I had an 056 Super that would pull a burried 28" bar through elm with ease (the 045 super is basically the same saw... same cc and all). It looks like Stihl said up to 36" could be used (recommended anyway). It's not an absolute beast of a saw, but it's definately not one you'd pass over to your wife to do some "light work" with. I'd compare the power to an 046, but maybe with a little less speed, and a little more torque.

I'd use bars from 20" to 32" with it.

The 045/ 056 saws have the hardest times with ignitions it seems-- if they go out they're hard to find. I would rather have the older point style ignition myself (like on the 045) because they seem to be easier to find, and interchange with the stihl 041 (and others too I believe).

Best of luck with the saw (I'm betting you get it!)

well it sure sounds like a lot better saw than my poulan 2550, being able to handle a 32" bar compared to my 18". Don't really like not being able to get parts for it but we'll see. As of now I'm thinking I'm going to sell my poulan 2550LE and get this 045. Its funny how I just found this site looking for some help with my saw and after reading a bunch of posts I start looking at new saws and now find myself wanting, I mean "needing" a new saw!

Thanks

Stihl 045 is 75cc and Super is 87cc if I recall. Very heavy saws thus be prepared for it. I have an 045 that runs great and I really like it. However I'd hate to be out there all day with it. A good 045 can exceed $200 easily. Super more than that.,
