Hi everyone I’m new in the forum and pardon my English…(I’m from Italy)
Today I was disassembling a Stihl 046 and in the bottom of the crankcase I found a good chunk of paint missing.
I’ve read on the forum about the “white death” but haven’t heard anyone having problems with it.
My question is:
Should I strip the rest of the paint down?
Can I re-coat it with some kind of special paint or is it fine like that?
Here some photo, I’ve already scraped everything I could what is left looks solid
Thanks

That is corrosion, but you can fix it. Use sandpaper (sandpaper only will not introduce a dissimilar metal, which causes corrosion too) Work all the dark spots out so that it’s all shiny new metal. Then you can refinish it and expect it to last.Be sure to degrease it and wash in soap and water, then blow it dry after you’ve finished sanding it. You will now have every reason to expect the paint to stick.

Do you think that even without painting it will be fine?

Remove any lose oem powdercoat and then yes, leave it. If you put paint in there sooner or later (sooner) it will be dissolved by the fuel and you’ll have a bigger problem on your hands.

If it holds pressure and vacuum (e.g there are no pin holes) leave well alone. You can have it professionally powder coated, but I’d suggest against it. Many old saws I’ve worked on were never painted inside.

if you have pin holes or it’s thin, clean well and use Jb weld to fill it. JB is very heat & fuel resistant and won’t flake off.

I also have a 028 wb stihl I purchased said had water in cylinder I rebuild stihl saws etc mostly older saws but anyhow done a full tear down and haven't never dealt with white death or even herd of it until this site so I joined up thanks for the welcome I am the rubber duck but could use some help please does this need to be fixed sanded paint piston was like new mahle cylinder and mahle piston was going put rings new seals and I always put new bearings and seals and do a professional cleaning on every single part these old stihl wood beaver's deserve it .IMG_20230103_173135.jpgIMG_20230103_173206.jpg

Not trying to steal your thunder but thought might could help us both is this white death or corrosion from the water in it. Rubber duck

unless it’s powdercoat, or 2k, nothing else will stand up to fuel. If it is lose, your best bet is to remove the powdercoat and leave it bare metal inside and don’t store it where there is a big fluctuation in temps where condensation can get it. If that pitting is minor, not deep etc, leave well alone. Alternatively, clean up and use jb weld and smooth flat.

I have bought saws that were completely eaten up and told it was from cutting palm trees.
But, they still worked fine.
Bought my ms460 stihl from southern Calif, had significant palm damage on the clutch side! Luckily, it was external only, so JB Weld was applied, and is still working 7 yrs later. It's my go to saw for milling medium sized wood and sees a lot of action, runs as it should and never let me down!

Thanks for the info on the white death one place has a little more than minor putting not to bad got all the lose off degreaser and washed with warm disdeterget and rised thoroughly then I dry it quick with air gun or hair dryer might put a little jb on one place thanks.
