Mod the muffler, put a new HD2 air filter on it, re-tune the carb and go cut wood. After that you can come back for more :)

Modding the muffler vs. replacing it... which is better?

Modding it is essentially adding an exhaust port, correct?

I would mod the stock muffler ,and buy a dual port cover from one of the site sponsors ,should be able to find one for about 25 bucks .

If you put a dual port muffler cover on, what still needs to be done to the stock half?

open up the stock hole to about the deflector shield ,hole will be about 9/16 to 5/8 inch maybe when done ,and there is a baffle inside that can be removed if you want ,here are couple examples ,second pic is of baffle to remove .461 muffler 002.JPG 461 muffler 001.JPG hybrd 440 muffler 003.JPG

I ran half a dozen tanks of fuel through an 046 today bucking up a pile of logs. They're a good machine.

Well I had narrowed my search to one of 3 saws: 038 Super/Mag, 044mag, or 046mag. Found an 046mag in good running shape...go big or go home right? lol

The Mag designation on many of them means nothing (it sold saws). If you post the first 3 digits of your SN, we can likely tell you if it is a D chamber saw, they were only put on early production 046s.

As Brad eluded to earlier, after you put the HD-2 and DP muff cover on (+ open the stock muffler hole), you will need to make the tune a bit richer. Make sure the saw "4 strokes" (breaks up a bit) when at WOT and not in the wood. It should smooth out as soon as it is in the wood. Running a saw too lean will burn it up fast.

I would change the plug, fuel line & filter, and check the impulse line & boot and make sure they look good. Air leaks will make a saw run lean and burn it up.

They are very nice saws, a little heavy for limbing, but great for bucking. Also, very durable.

Congrats.

Hey, does this mean I get to make fun of someone else for mentioning HD-2 & DP cover!!!!!!

No Mike, he's talking about an 046 not a 10mm 044... LOL But that was solid advice and should make for a nasty saw. I thought that the 038 was pretty near 046 specs, although a heavier saw. A local friend has one and it has some torque.

Couple pics from today. Not too bad for my first time, and the 046 is a beast!
