I picked up a Stihl 056 today for $100.00 in really good condition and it even started on the third pull with fresh gas.

I currently have a Husky 455 Rancher (my first saw) and also a 372 XPW as my primary saw.

Should I sell the Husky 455 and keep the Stihl as a backup saw?

Also what do people recommend I do to the Stihl for a tuneup? What oil should I be using for it?

Thanks.

PS may want a mod to remove my post from the homeowner section. Same post as this one. (didn't scroll down far enough)

Nice buy I'd like to find a deal like that.If your gonna make it on this site remember more saws the better. With a 372 and a 56 you will find the 455 siting a lot so take it out for a walk occasionally.

The big problem is convincing the wife I need three saws. (Well that and selling one would give me enough money to buy that gas grill).

I figured I'd start saving my money and buy a 346xp next year for limbing.

Make sure the air filter is in good serviceable shape keep it clean a new spark plug wouldn't hurt fuel filter clean oil and mix. It looks like a super should have electronic ignition others may have a few more tips with more exp than I. Welcome to the site.

In the tank there is one at the end of the fuel line also inside the carb there is a screen. Excellent find on the saw can't go wrong for that kind of price. If it was a MAGII I would say use the 372 as the backup:rock:

Use the 056 for your big wood... it will drive a 36 inch bar all day long...

Tuning... Not much to it... Set the top end to 12,000 WOT with bar and chain, and forget it. New fuel filter (get the BIG stihl filter), plug, clean out the air-filter etc..

It gets easier as the number of saws increases. I had a hard time with saw #3, but after that she just gave up and the saws can come and go as they please.

Does anyone offer a good exploded view manual of the 056?

Also, what's the best source or parts for the saw online?

Thanks for the recommendations so far guys.

Normally I would agree but the goal is to have all our debts paid off (including the house) in another 5-7 years so I'm on a tight budget when it comes to equipment. Usually new power equipment involves me making some money on the side to save up for the new equipment. Once everything is paid off we'll have a really free budget.

IPLs for the 056... not available on line, but PM me and I'll see if I can russle up a copy..

Apart from AS members, the best "non-Stihl" source is Ebay stores... Just type 056 stihl" into the Ebay search engine...

If you HAVE to dump one, its the 455, hands down. You'll come out ahead financially, and you'll have a couple of terrific saws. I'd love a good 056 for $100.

My first 056 was a $100 special from a pawn shop on Christmas Eve! It wouldn't run because the carb was so far out of adjustment, and when it did, it would bog because the nose and the sprocket where different pitch. A tune and a new bar, ran fine.

Good deal for 100 $ wow,056 is a very good old saw Ive had one for 20 yrs now always starts never had probs, just keep her tuned and your good to go

I have a 056 and the best word to decribe that saw is it is a beast! This is a personal thing but I like the older Stihls. Hell I got rid of my 044 and kept the 041. But if I cut as a pro I might think otherwise!Just one thing ask your wife how many shoes she has and how much they cost. Then keep the rancher for yard work and dirty job's that you don't want to use your other saws for.
