I finally picked up an Stihl 070. I have a few questions about it. If I wanted to restore it how do I know what paint colors to use? It is more the red color than the orange color on the top cover. If I supply the serial # can I find an aprox. age? 1192884 is the serial. It needs some clean up but all in all pretty decent saw. It has spark and comp. The carb cleaned up real nice. I need to clean the fuel tank inside. I am going to run it as the 070 for a little bit, but we all know whats going to happen to it.

If you want to turn it into an 090, start looking now for a clutch.
I have an 070 and haven't had any desire to upgrade it. But if the cylinder went bad, I'd go bigger. (probably with the original clutch and just "go easy" on it)

Will a 090 clutch fit inside the 070 drive sprocket? Maybe I will never go bigger, but the curiosity might win out. It only came with a 21" Stihl Duramatic bar and chain. So unless I upgrade the bar and chain it wont get worked to hard.

21"? I wouldn't lug that tug boat around for a mere 21" capability... You need to find a respectable bar for that saw, like about 59" or something like that. I think the sprockets are the same and it's just the clutch internals but not for sure. Mostly I've seen spur sprockets for these saws.

Are the case halves made of cast alum or mag? The front handle mount is cracked. Who would I talk to about finding a few parts? Rear handle is cracked but works and chain cover has a chunk missing and the outside dog went with. I know I can buy new aftermarket but I would prefer Stihl and old paint to match.

So can an experienced tig welder weld magnesium? Yes that is the part that is broke. As far as pics, the saw is in a box of parts at the moment but I can work on a few pics. Id still like to try and paint the top cover but want to match the color. It still looks more red than orange to me. Makes me feel like its an earlier saw. How would I know its approx. age?

Yes, there's a member here on AS that's a good Mag welder.
I know the red paint you mean, and yes, it would be an early saw from around 1970 I'd say, without seeing it.... Is it an AV saw ?

did you find that saw over in Pillow PA?

That is the right color. Now how do I match it, cause mine isn't even close to that.
And Farmer yes that's the one. I had to stop mowing grass and go pick it up quickly because of you guys beating up his phone. He claims that he had no idea that old saw would be that popular. For some reason he must like the attention because its still listed.

good job. figured that was the one from your pics.

Farmer if you feel that way id hate for you to find out what I paid or didn't pay for it...
Id also be in the market for a larger bar if anyone has one they wld like to have a new home. Saw is at the welders shop hoping to get a chunk of the mag. where the front handle attaches, put back on. Welder tried to scare me with it might catch fire and cant put it out. I told him to keep it cool, id like the saw back not a tiki torch.

Sand will put it out. I have a 36" large mount oregon bar. It's the old school 3 rivet tip. I think I have a 404 tip. I know I have some 3/8" tips.
