i know that this is going to stir up some trouble but here goes, i'm looking to build a saw from the ground up with new and used parts from ebay,etc..... because i don't have the extra $1,000 or more for a new big saw, i really don't need this big of a saw but i just want one, i do have a husky 257 and love it but i want something bigger, i'm not in the logging business either but i do primarilly heat my home with wood and i am now usually cuttng about 2-3 tuckloads a week. i nkow everyone is going to steer me away from a big saw for fire wood use but thats what i want, lol. which saw would be the better choice to to build financially and have the best performance and reliability? thanks!

A Husky 394/395 willl probably prove the most economical to put togethjer. It is also arguably the best firewood saw of the choices you list. Yes I would prefer to steer you to a smaller saw for firewood cutting.-Husky 372s and Stihl 044s are just about perfect for serious firewood cutting A Dolmar 7900 is slightly beyond perfect. Big saws are interesting. I don't blame you for wanting one but a 4-5 cube saw is a better firewood saw. --But hey, noone says we have to be practical!

Hey don't listen to them. I've been known to use my 3120 and 395 for bucking up fire wood. I could cut into blocks 14" long enough to fill my 1500 chevy in 15 min or less. It gets the job done fast.

If it is the fun of tinkering you are after, more than the running, I would go for the saw easyest to get and get parts for.
By two or more of the same and have fun. Don't spend too much on expencive parts, try and find complete saws, and have FUN.

It Is Actually Both, I Love To Tinker With Them And I Will Be Running Them, I Primary Heat My House With Wood And I Usually Cut About 2-3 Truckloads A Week, I Started With Using Old Beater Saws That I Would Buy In The Local Papers, You Know Like Thoses Junky Mac 10-10's, Pro Macs, Poulans, Homelite's,etc.. And It Was Starting Seem Like I Was Spending More Time And Money Fixing Them Then Cutting Wood Until I Finally Bought A Real Saw, My Husky 257 And I Love It, I Want To Try Out A Stihl To See What They Run Like, I Have Had A Few Stihls And Sold Them On Ebay But Never Cut With Them, This Is Not My First Husky Either, I Had A 55 Rancher Until Someone Stole It! And I Just Recently Sold A Husky 51 On Ebay For $152.00 And All That I Paid For It Was $20 And Put A New Set Of Rings And Gaskets. And I'm Still Looking For That Stihl Project Saw, I Figured I Would Have Found One On Here By Now!lol I'm Looking For A 066 And Up Sthl Project Saw In Any Condition Even If It's Just A Bare Crankcase, Hey You Have To Start Somewhere.!lol Thanks
