stihl 08S 47mm red and gray version

does anyone have pictures of any decals or safety warnings that came on this particular saw
 
yea i thought of those, ive looked even internet searches but there is not much at all on the red and gray version

i have an 08s orange and gray version 49mm piston
1. manual 1108 version --- for quick stop version
2 IPL 1108 version --- for quickstop version
3.Service man starting at 4819800 with rocker kill switch,49mm piston, NON quickstop and STIHL 08S badge on oil tank instead of raised lettering, this would be the saw that superceded the saw i have (with raised STIHL O8S oil tank lettering, push button kill switch ,47mm and non quickstop)

for 08s red and gray 47mm piston and early version flywheel with 3 slots in the face, push button kill switch, non quickstop(the saw i have) i have the following
1. Service manual which my saw serial number falls in between the serial numbers stated on my manual and the next version service manual
2. matching IPL
i can cannot find an owners manual corresponding to this saw, ive looked just about everywhere i can think of online and cannot find it.

Sometimes there are tech update manuals. I found this out while working on my 056 magnum. Things might have changed while the saw was in production and Stihl issued update to the dealers.
 
i notices all the subtle little changes, like the rocker kill switch,
from 08 to 08s the trigger lockout lever on top, the lack of the trigger lock carried on into the 08s 47mm version for a bit before the trigger lockout lever was added
the switching to the plastic trigger locking button on the 08s 49mm version from the metal one on my early red handle 47mm 08s
the challenge i of figuring out all these little things is what keeps me looking and trying to
to get my saw i guess historically correct, i just found in my IPL for this saw that im missing the two shims that go behind the main journal bearings to decrease the amount of crank walk, so apart it comes again.. and i notices that there check washers that go on the wrist pin pin under the piston..but theres absolutely no room for them yo slide in there, so im confused on this one.

ive got my eye on an 08 that might prove to be a bit of challenge cuz i cant find any manuals or original IPL for it
i seem to remember there was somekind of label on these saws when my pop first brought them home
 
Yes sir they are.. Hell... They're almost idiot proof.. The only thing we did was unhook the governor then use the high speed needle to slow em down a bit... And never go full throttle unless it's in the cut and chewin..

I'm 46 and to this day I can't smell cedar or hear a chainsaw without thinking about the 08 line.. I just scored what in hoping is actually an 08 with 44m piston.. The handle and oil tank say yes but you know who that goes...lol

Now Im keeping an eye for an 08seq...then I have all the 08s I need.. But maybe I'll throw an se in there too
 
I had the seq 08s but it had no spark so I converted it back to points.
Legend has it there were three sizes of 08s.

60 cc I have the serial numbers where they changed
some of mine might be 60cc I have never checked
I also have an S10 same as 08s but not top handle and different carb another excellent saw.
My brother bought it brand new in 1969 I remember he gave my mom the money to pick him up a new Pionier as he was starting cut and skid.She brought home the S10 and he was mad as hell she told him the saw dealer told her it and the 08s were the saws that most of the pro cutters were using.He reluctantly said he would try it,He was surprised and happy how well it ran and how it always started with ease.He later switched to Jonsereds and gave me the saw it needed new rings

as far as i know that is correct.. the original first 08 which i just got for 50.00 if it is indeed an 08 was 44mm,
s10 rear handle
then s10 and if not mistaken there was a top handle version
then the first 08 at 44mm
then the 08s which im workin on finishing up is 47mm
then after a while the 08s went to 49mm
then electronic ignition
then quickstop
at the time i think it was considered a pro saw im not sure..
bullet proof little suckers, but they are hard on the hands and back LOL,
i know the electronic ignitions are better for many reasons, but when the points or condenser
started to go bad, they keep running long enough to get the job done..
it seems like the 08seq my dad had ran great but when the module started to go bad it was done.
not the fastest saws, but they are work horses , i love em,
im makin sure both my sons have one and ill make my daughter swing one of the 015ls LOL

im still confused on the 015L i just finished that ended up with 187 psi compression..it seems like an absurd amount of compression
for those saws, but i guess i shouldnt be complaining right.
 
I have around 40 working saws and I will take points every time.I sawed thousands of cords of wood in my life and I have never replaced a set of points or condensor just file them and reset the gap.
The 08 was sthils pro saw in the sixties there were thousands of them used by pulp cutters here in Northwestern Ontario well into the seventies.Ask any old timer who worked in the bush and most will say the most dependable saw they ever used.
The only complaint was gas tank to small .
The first thing most guys disconnected was the flywheel govenor.

yea, my dad complained about the saw not really living up to its hype...i noticed one day the little flappy thing moving, i was 11 i think... so one day i snuck into the garage and disconnected the governor at the carb and removed the linkage... he was so happy with the saw after that, i did it to all of them , i didnt come clean till about month later when he over revved on and killed it. he was not happy , i fixed it with my money and the saws never had governors after that..we just made sure they were eating at full throttle ...im not sure why folks say they were so slow.. our saws were freakin hungry ..but most of the wood we cut was dry standing and fallen cedar, biiiigggg cedar i remember some of the bases bein a good 4 to 6 foot in diameter, biggest cedars i ever saw .. but were west texas, you guys are used to dealing with bigger stuff probably....

hard work..but it builds character.. he never made my younger brothers do the work and was rewarded later in life by 2 disrespectful ungrateful sons. he was was my stepdad...didnt treat me like a son.. but i respected him for what he was and stood for. and i still do....he taught taught me the value of hard work, blood , sweat and tears , integrity, responsibility and to stand up for yourself even when it means standing up to your friends or your old man.
its how i raised my kids
because of him, my work means something. if i give my word,
i keep, no matter what it costs me or how it inconveniences me
a mans or womans word is one of the very few things the world cannot take from you .
and the government cannot tax.
thats why i watch what comes out of my mouth
 
I believe a mans word is his bond.
As kids we worked just like men.I started sawing fire wood at 11 years old with a Pioneer 600.
my dad always said keep your eyes and ears open and your mouth shut.I never had a problem with the first two but blew the third one on more occasions than I want to admit.
Your only lieing to your self and if you cannot be honest with your self you may as well be dead because you are no use to any one else because you cannot be trusted or depended on
Still love the looks and sounds of a Pioneer 600 but she sure was heavy for a 90 lb kid. If someone had handed me an 08 I would have thought I was in bush heaven

ill stop complaining about the 08 ..LOL
i think 10 or 11 is around the time he turned me loose with the saw as well

the old man would tie blocks to my feet and built a box for me to sit on
put an old hat on my head and id follow him in truck number 2 ford f500 ithink with 16 foot bed
331 2 barrel , MT , speed gearbox no power steering...fully loaded back to the mill at 11 years old..
pretty damn crazy even by old days standards LOL
once the truck got too heavy i could no drive it in the pasture, but out on the dirt road and highway it could just manage
i remember there was 1 hill.. super steep grade .. may 150 feet down..on the right 3 feet of shoulder ..was a sheer drop on rocksprings highway
2nd gear, low ratio selected, on the brakes,,,
old 331 i think screaming like it was gonna throw rods at me..
i burned up more than one set of brake shoes when i missed the downshift and panicked on the brakes, it took 4 seconds before they were so hot
that i had nothing and just had to ride it down.. LMAO .. thats where i learned true terror and how to control my fear after a while.
i wish i did not have to raise my kids to be so untrusting of everyone.
but its a different world they have to row up in than i did
 
older thread i know but i’m building an 08s brand new from the ground up i have everything but the top cover, clutch cover and duro bar! if anybody still has any of these, please reach out
