So I got a new carb kit in the 08s today and it ran just fine for a bit but then revved up and died any idea what it could be I have been having trouble figuring out how the governor linkage works.

Only thing I didn’t do when cleaning the carb was take out the Welch plug but I useally only do that when the carb is really dirty it would run like crap before the rebuild.

The governor is a fan governor the carb choke and fan are hooked together so when the saw revs too high the governor pushes on the choke to give it extra gas and slow the saw down. Most 08s saws have the governor disconnected.
Check to make sure your exhaust ports and muffler are clean. These are my favorite saws bullet proof easy to work on and super dependable and cool to look at.

The exhaust port wasn’t that bad not much to scrape out. the muffler is pretty oily though the little ports on that were bent up pretty good when I got it.

Sound like you may have dirt under the welch plug or the needle arm is not set correctly. Aso, the gasket should go on the carb body before the diaphragm. I attached two pics of the governor linkage. Second pic shows the different settings for spring tension. The top hole where I have mine is the least tension and least gov. control. As already said, some simply disconnect it and tune normally. I recommend staying on the rich side. I left the gov. intact on mine as it was a restoration and I rarely use it.
There we go I will have to flip the governor around I’ve tried it a few different ways yesterday. is there anything for the spring to actually sit in on the carb side.

The pickup fuel line is a bit soft but I can’t just run to a store and get it since it’s a moulded line.

Been a while since I was into mine. If you mean the spring in the pic, I think it wraps around the shaft.
Yea but theirs 2 ends one that is hooked and the other that is straight on mine the straight end is against the carb but doesn’t really have anywhere to go other then find something to catch on

Ok so I have the governor hooked up the way it is in the pic above. This is a hl166b carb and when I took it apart it had a rk88hl kit in it so that’s what I put back in should I swap it for a Rk114hl?. I also have a hl166c and a hl292 both of these need a rebuild.

I have rebuilt quite a few ts350’s including new cylinders never had this issue all would start after the carb had fuel. It has compression 170psi worth according to my gauge and spark even had the spark tester on while it was running on a prime.

Definitely lose the governor link. First repair performed on any 08.
I read that it would rev out of control and blow up without it .
It’s not the governor doing it though it’s not getting fuel and I’m thinking the carb had the wrong kit in it from the day I bought the saw.

Ok so rebuilt another carb I had and now it’s getting too much fuel coming out the intake and exhaust and not firing. It’s an early model so has the older style coil not the electronic one and it has spark.

Are you sure you have the correct fuel pump diaphragm? Had a similar problem with an HL and had the wrong diaphragm. It had a large hole instead of being solid. Th kit had several.
The 166c uses the RK114HL kit and that’s what I put in it got it figured out the spring came loose when I tightened down the screw. but now my problem is I can’t start it bc the pawls don’t engage.

I was hoping to use the saw tomorrow as my John Deere is not piling bc I still have to order the line and filter for it.

I do not know if the nylon cup is still available I used a spare one I had to fix an 08s last week. Pleas advise if it is.The nylon cups last a long time and it was a much better idea than the aluminium cup used on other saws with Fairbanks Morse starters

Found both available the nylon and a metal one I ordered the metal one hopefully it fits. I was about 10 minutes late for a newer model 08s with a chain break locally 2 days ago looked like it was hardly used at all.
