ok experts, i need some help.

i am looking to buy a few more loops of chain. currently i am running .325 .063 stihl chain on my 16" and 20" bars. i started with the "green" tabs, but went to the "yellow" ones and will not go back.

my question is, should i keep spending the extra cash on the stihl chain, or is woodsman pro or even oregon chain just as good if kept sharp? if it is just as good, what kind should i get that would match stihl's "yellow" tabs the closest?

i cut all hardwoods, most of them under 20" diameter...

Oregon chain is god but different. Stihl chain keeps and edge longer, but is harder to sharpen. This is due to its very high chrome content.

Oregon chain has less chrome, so it is softer. It is way easier to sharpen, but dulls out easier.
I prefer Stihl. Although pricier I feel it is superior.

I've had good luck with Woodsmen Pro and Carlton chain both. I like the RS Stihl chain, but the extra cost is not justifiable in my humble opinion. I don't have any problems keeping the Carlton or Woodsmen Pro chain sharp; and, I cut some rough dead stuff out here. If in doubt, try a loop or two before buying a roll.

This is the woodsman pro chain which is closest to stihl rapid super. I only had one loop and was happy with it until I hit a rock grown into a stump. Glad it was not a new loop of Rapid Super!
I am having much better luck hand filing the WP, especially in 3/8, than I had with stihl hard chrome.

I just bought a 32" loop of Woodsman Pro Skip from Baileys. I asked them the same question and they said that Woodsman Pro is harder steel than the Oregon chain but still a bit softer than the Stihl at about half the price of a new Stihl chain.

I think Stihl is the best chain on the market but is it worth the $$$?

chain or this chain

Woodsman pro is just fine. Oregon is just fine. Stihl is just fine. this is one of these topics ----->>>>>>>>>>:deadhorse: :hmm3grin2orange: i have found what really matters is how well the saw operator maintains their equipment and knows what they are cutting.:chainsawguy: also the amount of cutting and the type of wood being cut also plays a critical part in the chain selection. another problem is the type of saw being used for the wood being cut. pro saw versus home owner, and or pullon :yoyo:

Go for broke

Hey there Pyro;

The 260 PRO loves the 16" with .325, doesn't it? I have a 20" bar for it, but it doesn't work great here in the hardwood, but you really can't beat that 16.
The Stihl chain is pricey, but to be honest I have all WP from Bailey's now. I am not a pro, but I cut about 50 cord a year for myself and friends. I have a bunch o saws of all different shades, and there is something to be said for just clicking on a bunch of chains and having them show up from Baileys.

Buy a good grinder, learn from someone how to do it right, and never look back. A little field dressings here and there, and you won't regret it.

Have a great day Pyro,
Jason

What kind of yellow Stihl chain are you using?

RS/RSC is best for clean wood, RM/RMC for dirtier wood......

I prefere Stihl over Oregon when availiable in the right variant, but not a big deal......

I have never used Carlton/Woodsmanpro......

thanks all for the replies. i just bought 2 20" loops from baileys (woodsman PRO). i'll see how they stand up to cutting...

i use RS. most of the wood we cut is down or leaning, but not laying on the ground...

Is there a Woodsman Pro version of RM? I need something for dirty wood (0.058" x 3/8").

WooHoo! 100th post! :D

yes, Bailey's sells a Woodsman Pro RM-equivalent chain. They just call is "semi chisel"... :biggrinbounce2:

i have used numerous loops of WP 30RCS... it is good chain. A little softer than I would like... but the price is right.

I prefer the Stihl chain because it holds it's edge a little longer... but it will wear out files quicker.

Stihl chain is definetly better, no doubt in my opion. But cost wise i preffer oregon and WP. The Stihl chain does last longer, but i'm with West Texas in that the extra cost of the Stihl chain is not justifiable for all the more longer/durable it is.

Chains

I think the guys have it right with the Stihl Chain being the best/hardest chain there is. I will say the new Oregon chain (it's got like a bluish tint on the cutters) is just as or close to as good as the stihl chain though. I've started using that instead of the Stihl chain as it's about 1/2 the price and seems to hold up every bit as good as the Stihl stuff..
