Contra/ lightning 'S' AV, I do believe it is original, the bloke that sold the saw ($500) said he had it for years.
On the Contra AV the top mount is flat steel, on the 070/090 AV this part is tube.

I thought that all the Contra/Lightning S, came with the bigger starter recoils that had the embossed Stihl logo. The S did not hit the market until 1964 I believe, that was after the old FM starters and the early logo starters that had less fins. I do believe that many loggers fitted 137cc top ends on their original 106cc Contra. Does the tag read 1106 or 1106s?

That is an excellent Contra S!! That is the earliest 1106s tag that I have seen! Congrats! I learn something new everyday. All of the 1106s tags that I have seen are a greenish color and are not embossed or raised like yours.
There is a guy that tells me his early S has a embossed tag thats made of brass!!
Yes,..from the little I have learned so far the early Contra`s had Fairbanks Morse recoils.
My tag has the raised letters and numbers as if they are stamped from the back side of the tag. It states 1106S on a raised flat spot. I will have to take a good closeup of that tag. It appears that the tag would have been one of the green ones as there is still a hint of green between the letters and surrounding the STIHL logo.
How did you get on with your red top? the FM starter should be easy enough to find............but that heat shroud for a 'S' well, thats going to be a long look!
My tag is exactly like that , just a diff serial no.
I have not heard back from the seller as of yet. May take a day or so but I can wait.
The starter should be easier to find than the heat shield so I have been told a few times now from other collectors. The heat shield will be easy for me to fab up but of course it won`t be original piece.
Yes, those 'S' shrouds are so hard to find here I've looked into having them cast, can't be cast that thin, machined, cost to high!

Its good to have one thread that has a lot of info in it as possible, helps greatly for future searches.
I've just been comparing the 106cc Contra shroud with the 137cc shroud, i was thinking maybe the more common 106 shroud could be made to fit, not so!
The 137 shroud would be much larger diameter and it needs that extra bump in the top.
