I get to pick her up today, and thing special I have to do since it has a new carb. Is there a break in period or anything like that? I just don't want to have to go through all of this again.

Im not a pro and Im sure you will get a correct answer from one of them but I don't think there is any special break in for the carb just make sure they have it adjusted correctly and you are good to run it. I believe the break in procedure applies more for the internal parts of the engine piston/cylinder etc.

If I have this wrong someone will correct me.

As long as it is adj properly you should be good to go.

As always, never run the saw 1/2 throttle. It's either idling or wide open.

Well after all of the messing around I got the 230 back. Cut one day with it an the carb was still acting up. Took the saw out 2 days later and couldnt even get it to start. The engine was flooded, and i started it the same as I always did. Took it home, cleared the engine and dried the plug. Went to start it again and it still wouldn't start. My dad was overseeing the opperation and told me that the plug sounds like it is not getting spark. he gave me an old plug he had, and the saw fired up.

Went up to the woods and cut a little, then the saw started to bog out. The chain came off and got stuck in the adjuster. I couldn't budge it. Called the dealership and let them know that it still was not running correctly. They offered me my money back.

Monday I took the saw back to the dealer and decided to give them one more chance and decided on getting the MS 290. I did not want to go back to this dealer, but was stuck because the only other dealer i could see would be 2 saturdays from now.

Filled out all of the paper work, everything is ready to go, the salesman went back to the shop to put fuel in it and start it up to make sure everyhing was ok. I sat there and waited, and waited and waited, finally he came back out and let me know that the brand new farm boss would not start. I went back to work and he emailed me that he grabbed the newest saw they had in stock (been there 20 days) and got it all fired up.

I took the farm boss out last night and was very impressed in this saw. Very easy to start even without the easy 2 start. It ran perfect and blew the other saw out of the water. I am almost happy that the 230 was junk because this saw is a much better wood cutter.

I am happy to be cutting again and hope this saw stays running strong. I still cant believe that i had that many issues with my brand new 230, and also that the other brand new farm boss would not start. Hard to believe that one can have that much bad luck.

Still not happy with that dealer, because when they gave me my money back they informed me that I would not be getting the tax I paid on the 230 back in trade. I am not sure why or how they could do that, but I am just so tired of dealing with them.

Probably not the dealer's call,

In a lot of states the sales tax is typically forfeit by law on returns made after 30 days, even with the original receipt. One more way the Gov makes sure he gets his cut and a little extra.

Quick search on PA state sales tax regulations should get you an answer.

Glad things seemed to have worked out and you're enjoying the new saw.

Take Care

I cut with it for 4-6 loads and the say died on me.

I found out last Tuesday that it needed a whole new carborator, since the factory carb had a malfunctioning jet.

You cut 4-6 LOADS of wood and then the "jet" malfunctioned? Something sounds fishy here. Most dealers do not repair carbs anymore, they just swap them out. I wonder if they even looked inside the carb to see if contaminated fuel may have been at play here. I suspect this even more since your second carb had "issues."

Was there no other way to get a carburator for my saw shipped to them?

Could they not contact another Stihl dealership, for the part?

NO they should not. Each dealer is independent. We have had to go to other dealers once in a while to get promised items, and they NEVER give us anything other than full retail. I once had to loose $ on a hedge trimmer, as it was not ordered when it was promised. We went and bought it (at full price) from a competitor across town, and sold it at the agreed discount price to the customer. :( Customer left happy though.

I had asked them about this on the first day that I brought it back, and they told me that the liability is too great to have any type of rental/loaner chainsaws, they told me they had blowers, and pushers for rent but not saws.

I understand that the min parts order dilema was out of their hands, but do you think they should have contacted another dealer to get the parts needed to fix the saw.

See above, NO. The min order is not out of their hands. There is no such thing as a minimum order. The min order is to qualify for free shipping. Either way, Stihl will pay just about any claim if you call and ask them nicely.

(!!!!!) The SECOND brand-new "carb" was acting up????? Sorry, but I REALLY don't think so. Then it was the ignition? You admit to flooding it and then put a new plug in and it fired? Now the chain came off and somehow that is related to the bad carb, ignition, AND spark plug on the same saw? Wow.

I am glad that you got the 290 and that it is running well (for now.) I suspect that all you really needed was a little training on how to start the 230, and all would have been well. About 50% of the comebacks we get on new units are just flooded and have NOTHING wrong with them other than the owner NOT reading the manual. If you pulled it more than 5 times with the choke on, it was flooded even if you didn't hear it try to fire. The manual says that. If there actually was an issue with the 230, I would be wiling to bet it was fuel related. You might want to check your fuel before the boogie man gets into your 290 and makes the chain/ignition/plug/carb start acting up. They probably won't give your $ back twice.

FYI, at our store (and any decent one) we would have repaired the saw as you waited when you brought it back the first time. We DO keep carbs in stock, but would have robbed a new unit if required. We had to strip a couple of new FS-90's last week of their coils, as the coil was backordered from Stihl for a few days. I sometimes get irritated when I get pulled off a job to do a "right now" thing, and even more irritated when I get pulled off a "right now" issue to do another more important "right now" one. In the end, we make the customer happy at all cost. Many times it is only training that is required, and a firm hand shake. Maybe that has something to do with the 700% increase in business in the last year and a half.

The 4-5 loads were in the trunk of my car, not in a truck. I was mixing 92 octane with Stihl's upgraded oil. All was fresh, all was exact mixing instructions.

not sure what other fuels I should look into. Don't feel like spending 9 dollars on a quart of motomix everytime I cut wood.

not familier with the 230 but does it have the auto kick down choke like the 290. there is a learning curve with saws. the 290 is fairly easy to run so hopefully it will be more forgiving till you get used to it.

Here's the scoop. I guess they had to have a minimum parts order that they had to place through STIHL. They just ordered the parts today. I am lost as to how they can not order just 1 part at a time if necessary. I tried to be civil, and asked the saleman to come out side to speak with me as to not inhibit any future sales, dumb but that is just how I am.

He had told me that he was under the impression that they ordered the parts last week, as was I, but still feel like I am getting the shaft on this one. I told him I needed the saw by Friday. I asked him to call the other dealership to verify when the parts would be in. I told him that I would settle for them swapping the carb from another 230 at this time, or a totally new saw.

Never had to deal with the whole parts issue/minimum order garbage before. Glad I found this site to learn how to fix these myself. Not sure that the warranty is all that great of a thing anyway.
Stihl has a min. Order to get free shipping. Anything from 1 small carb box and up they charge us 20.00 per box. Shipping is getting very expensive these days.
