So I've been a Stihl guy for a long time. As I get older my inquisitiveness gets a little bit greater year by year. I read on this site what great saws Huskys are, and with a little bit of research decided to buy a 262xp. I put an add in the Tradin' post and bought a saw that needed some work from a member. It has a KS jug and a Walbro 87 carb. After putting some work into it I finally had the pleasure, and that word does not come easily to my lips, to cut some wood with it. I have a red oak (38" at waist level) that we took down earlier in the year. To my suprise and sheer delight the 262 cut through some 15" branches pretty easily. I am impressed. It has got some spunk to it. I recently bought a 372 that I'm going to work on next. All in all I coudnt be happier with that saw. I wont give up my Stihls, but it has been a good experience so far. I MIGHT even ask my neighbor, who has a 460 rancher and raves about it, if he'd like to run a real saw!! He doesnt like Stihls, but a Husky he cant say no too! Maybe even charge him by the hour if he likes it! Lol

Totembear, congrats on your acquisition!

I have that same top end/carb combo on mine and I'm not getting it ported (1) because that top end just isn't real common and (2) a woods port job doesn't yield all that much gain (I am told).

Now, if I were to opt for a port job more on the radical side ...... :chainsaw:

Agree the cylinder isnt common so understand not getting ported for that reason. Will have to respectfully disagree that a woods port doesnt yield much gain. Mine is woods ported, squish band cut, mm and it will flat out scream. Gains are awesome on these saws.

I go back and forth from Stihl to Husky all the time, really not that much of a difference. And ah a woods port does yield some gain actually a pleasurable amount of gain.

Guys, understand I was only talking about the KS top end.

I'd have a Mahle top end cut in a heartbeat.

I dunno man, maybe the 372 won't impress so much. I think my 394 ruined it for me. :) If you want to be impressed with a Husky, pick up a 394/95.
No disrespect to that ol 262 though! Me likey! And I'm probably the equivalent Husky guy as you are to Stihl. I've run some damn impressive creamsicles, they were ported though, because stock saws suck (well, except for the previously mentioned big dogs). :)

Hope you weren't judging sweden by that poopy rancher!

Got a Mahle decomp jug if you ever wanted to hop up the 262. I think the 372 is impressive stock

Just my $.02 here ..... but my (stock) 576XP-AT made me sell my (stock) 371XP .....

... AFAIK, the only 371/372 major difference is that the 372 has more 'meat' in the PTO-side case half.

the 372 has a translucent fuel tank and a 2 ring piston I also believe there was a different hd carb on the older saws.

I have not run a 576, nobody has them because of the bad name from the 570 and 575.

the 262 is tough to improve upon the ports are large with great timing numbers and they have fair compression stock. about the only thing is to give a little more compression. But there are always gains to be found.

We'll see about the 372. It came yesterday. Bought it for $225, the guy said it was hard to pull and binded up sometime. Hell, my 440 does that because of the compression! Well I pulled it yesterday and everything seems to be alright. Havent pulled the muffler yet, but I've got a good feeling. Needs a little bit of work on the recoil and chainbrake. I had so much fun cutting with that 262 yesterday that I'm going to do it again today! Good day to enjoy the great outdoors!

Totembear, you need to pop over the mason dixon and meet up with some of the PA guys. There are some mean huskies and stihls and a few dolmars that will put a smile on your face. I really like my ported 372, 262 and 395 as far as huskies go. I won't let you run my ported 7900 because you'll want one of them too.
