Is there any special reason im finding it particularly hard to find any info on the stihl ms340? has anyone had this saw and or have any comments on it?
Im trying to get on with a local dangerous tree removal guy, and looking for the best way to do it. I chose this saw cause it was a bit bigger than the husky 353 and Its my ground saw so it can be a little heavier. Im just looking for any info on the stihl

Just look for information on the 034, of which the MS340 is (except possibly a couple very minor details) simply a renamed model.  If that's not easy to find, most everything about the 036/MS360 is applicable except the power output.

Most of us are in the States, and we haven't had an 034 available for quite some time.

The 034 was discontinued a long time ago and became the 036 (same bottom end different jug), then ms360 and now ms361.

I haven't seen or heard of a MS340.

Its not just in Canada, it is sold around the world, just not in the USA probably because of more restrictive EPA requirements, Stihl marketing dept. probably established sales volume initially versus modifications investment to comply may just not be worth it. Perhaps down the road that changes.
Its always a game of volumes and dollars & cents, basic economics. Nothing really ever changes does it ! :dizzy:

pebble in the carb

Im just breaking in my new stihlms340 and its making a sound thats like a pebble jumping around in the carburetor anyone have an idea what it could be? should i run the high and low adjustments more open while im breaking it in?

340 vs. 341

As far as I know, the 034 and 340 was basically the same as the 036 and 360. The 034/340 had about 56 cc's vs. 61.5 for the 036/360.

The 341 is basically the same as the 361, and both have 59 cc's - just different porting and maybe carbs, I think. Even if these somewhat resembles the older models, they are totally different animals in construction, I believe.

This means that there is quite a lot of difference between the 340 and 341.

The difference in power rating between "34" and "36" is still about the same.

What's the point?......
....probably to offer saws in different price categories, while rationalizing production(?)

Anyway, in case you haven't seen it before, here is a site that contains lots of Stihl info, among it IPL for MS340 and repair manual for 034/036.

Different markets - different models

I think Lobo is on the right track. What the competition does on the different markets is also a factor, I assume.

The MS341 isn't availiable over here either, nor was the 340.
I don't know why, but my best guess is that these models is/was not "needed" for competition purposes, as the 360 and 361 cost less than a 359 and a lot less than a 357xp.
The 440 isn't offered either. Again, I don't know why, but the 460 cost less than a 372xp......

What Stihl and Husky offer in different countries varies a lot. I think the oldest models still offered somewhere is the 08S and 070AV. The oldest Husky still offered is the 61, if memory serves me.
