I'm pretty sure you could set up a 290 to run 3/8's. Bars,chains and drive rim/sprockets are different. Look at the bars on both saws the info is printed on.

Anyway as long as the pitch is the same between the two then yes they are interchangeable. I don't see a problem running 3/8 on 029 saws
