At your stihl dealer. Any 12-16" Picco NARROW kerf bar will work. I like a 14" bar personally.

Your stihl dealer can hook you up with a new bar.

Be careful about sticking the saw on a limb, its a good way to strip the gears out. If it does hang up, dont just jerk it loose, climb up and cut it free.

Dont try to take off the whole branch, cut off shorter than 6 foot pieces.

Good post with information. Somebody rep him.

Jim would you run a 14" on the HT101 ???...Was thinking about it on mine..

.

It works fine. The thing about the 101 is that it has enough torque to run it. I have tried a 16" bar on my 131 with no problem.

Climb up and cut it free all that money and it is that weak man
I wonder if I should have bough different pole saw?
I use my hauchi more now as that thing stinks to hold out all day,
but power has its time and for the most part I'm ok with my stihl
polesaw, dealer replaced coil at about six months quit running but
did not cost me! I am wondering if anyone else has had the aluminum
bend, mine got caught in a bad spot me or the saw I chose the saw!

Its just using common sense, dont try to undercut a limb until it binds then yank on the saw. Use the same practices you would with a normal saw, but be more cautious. These things dont spin 14K+ like the big saws.

The coils were a known bad problem and we replace them for free when they come in. It was only a small run of them, about 6 months, and Stihl does NOT make their own coils.

Actually I was sixty foot up in the bucket I know how to cut
what happened is I was roping a very large limb and I prefer
to use the pole saw when doing this so am further away from
the action! The limb I was trying to hinge was 12 inch and about
thirty foot, well hinge it did not and came around fast and did not
have enough time to get saw clear! Branches hit it and bent it a little
but better than hitting me, it went as planned with that exception!

With replies coming in saying inches, this must have been the bar the chain is on, not the tube the shaft spins in - right?

I can't remember ever bending a chain bar before. :)

I have a HT 101 with a 14" bar and it works well. I have the same 14" yellow chain on my ms 200T. The 30 degree head makes a big difference on the pole saws.

Thats because you are probably one of the few people in treework who actually takes the time to think about what you're going to do before you do it. This accident was caused by poor workmanship and ill-thought out technique.

With a little care and attention to what you are trying to achieve this accident should have been completly avoidable.

Anyone know anything about the Stihl Combi powerhead KM100R?? I've ordered one with the pole pruner attachment, is it ok?

wait until they bend the extension pole part. or snap the gears off inside or snap the head off completely.

the Stihl power poles dont hold up to the abuse like their saw lineup does. if they built them stronger they would be heavier and we all know whats its like after using one for a few hours. its a compomise i suppose.

It was the pole part that was slightly bent in my incident and
as I have said I use it when doing the impossible to stay clear of
the action barberchair etc. Hinging down the big limbs above my
reach is when I normally use the pole saw. I don't want me or my
bucket near that action and on the very rare occasion the saw gets
nailed, I have eliminated an hour climb or more! I used climb everything
but was still eating green and as the gray appears climb only when
necessary.

I've not bent handsaw blades but I have thought of how bad it would be to have one break while pushing and pulling on it hard. I've never heard of it happening but a broken off blade would be a bad thing to drive your hand in to!

Geez, how I hate hand injuries.

The worst I had was in metal shop in Middle School. A big drill bit in a drill press snapped off and flipped into the palm of the hand I was holding the item in. :dizzy:

It cut a bunch of spiral wounds in my palm. The spiral-like scar is still in my palm.

One that was more painful yet, about 10 years ago - My left hand was flat holding a piece of wood I was driving a screw into with my cordless drill. The screw fell sideways and the spinning Phillips bit drove though the top of my nail.

I just got down on my knees, leaned on the counter, then decided to lay on the floor because I could tell the innevitable passing out for a moment was on it's way.
