Stihl Pricing for 044 & 046?

I think I might get an 046 tomorrow. I've been debating it for a while now and think it's time to get my first beefy saw. Kinda need it for this Saturday too. I'm 'bout to go read about switching to an 8 tooth chain sprocket and opening up the muffler. If I decide to make those minor mods, would it be better to do it before break in?

Is that true that using an EPA muffler during the break-in period can shorten the life of a saw? Is it just because of the increased heat?
