Recently acquired an S10 with a 24" bar and 3/8 Chisel. A friend from church also brought one to me, 17" bar and 404 Chisel, for a tune-up. He said it was "bogging" off idle and smoking. The low speed screw was about 2/3 turn open, opening to 1+ took care of bogging, but it does smoke. He assured me the mix is 40/1 and not more than a month old. It has a Tillotson HS Carb with govenor built into carb body. This saw has 90# of compression and turns about 8700 RPM. It seems to cut well, but not fast. May be the low RPM's. Compared to my 026 with 14" bar and 325 chain (turning in excess of 15000 and seeming to be looking to rev even faster). For the guys that are familar with S10, is this anywhere near the right compression and governed RPM. This 026 is my toy and I know eventually I will push it too far, but not yet!!!:D "So many saws, so little time" Larry

That's a rear handle 08S, right? Don't know much about them, but 8700 sounds about right for a saw that vintage. Compression could be on a low side.

I think that on governed saws you're supposed to adjust the top end ungoverned.

S10

These saws just keep showing up.
Did you try the saw in a block of wood? The governor usually only leans out when put under load. The rpm's sound about right. Remember. this is a 60's saw. That compression may be a little low, pick it up by the handle, it should hold or go down VERY slowly. I would do this less the bar on this model.
It is a variation of an 08, before they were supers. Came with .404 standard. Slow revs, big tooth.

I will check the timing tomorrow. To start with I tuned the saw by ear and it was not "happy" when put into a log. I richened up the high speed and it settled down and cut nicely without losing too many RPM's. All the saws that I work on get put into a log for testing. Stihltech; this saw is almost too new to interest me. Most of the saws I collect are 40's and 50's, two-man saws are the real attraction for me. I have an "1109 Stihl" chain reduction saw that I am looking for the roller chain. It is a Contra Lightning that actually has a roller chain instead of gears for the reduction part of the saw. Thanks,Larry Just thought about what Stihltech said about the govenor "leaning out", I was under the impression this type of govenor resonated at a factory set RPM and "richened" the fuel mixture, thus holding the engine at a particular RPM through a too rich mixture. I have defeated, what I believe is this type of govenor in the past, by using a brass shim in place of the jet at the base of the govenor. Those 900 series Homelites will run a few extra RPM's in this manner. Larry

1109??

Ill have to ask my stihl rep on that one.

never heard of it.

Timing was critical on many of that vintage McCulloch. You best forget them, they will drive you nuts.

We used to use them as rifle targets, but they didn't hold up well in that application either.
