Hi guys. I had a saw stolen off one of my trucks almost a year ago. I friend of mine asked me, if the new "owner" took off the metal tag on the saw, thereby removing the numbers, is there another place on the saw that has the numbers? Like the cylinder, etc.? Any insight would be helpful. I believe all is lost on this one. Thanks

Grrrr.

I just had a 394 lifted out of my truck last week. Makes me feel sorry for the filch, first being desperate enough to have to steal from another man's livelihood, and for the bad Karma he's gonna suffer. Why he didn't take the 346 sitting next to it, I don't know.

Luckily I have backup saws, pulled the other 394 out of the garage and went back to work, mildly disgusted, but it didn't bump my work schedule (except for the couple hours with the welder beefing up the security on the truck which I should have done a long time ago.)

I don't know about the serial numbers, but I often wonder about these microchips they put in doggy's ear so they can locate pooch when he gets lost. Why can't we put location chips in our saws, trucks, other valuables? Wouldn't that be neat? ONSTAR for saws. You knock on the theives door and ask for your saw back, "No sir, you DO have my saw, it's in your garage and I want it back. Give it back, you don't go to jail. Refuse me, I'll still get my saw back, but I'll prosecute you to the fullest extent of the law. Choose. "

I really hope you get your saw back. -TM-

Having equipment stolen really gives you a strange feeling. I had a 371XP, a 55 in case with all my extra chains and a leaf blower stolen about 3 years ago. It really bites especially with a $500 deductible. Never heard anything out of any of it.
Grateful

I don't want a chip in ANYTHING I own, its a privacy issue. I do however ingrave my name on the bottom of the crankcase on all my saws as well as a couple of other places.

I record the serial numbers of all of my equipment when I purchase it. When something gets lifted I turn it in to the police who send it out with the monthly/weekly stolen equipment list they send to pawn shops. I try not to use my insurance. All of my saws have the muffler modified as a minimum so they can be identified by the local shops if they come in for repair/service. It makes it harder for thieves but ebay makes it easier for most of them.
It's really sad when you think about it.
I pray you find your equipment.

UPS will pick up your PP372XPG tomorrow. I did put some identifying marks on the saw for you. I used my 4” grinder and ground two P’s in every part on the saw for you. It is rather ugly but you will be able to identify it.
Later

One thing is for sure, if you don't have the serial number for your saw, gun, or anything else it can't be entered into the national database as stolen. Although it doesn't mean you'll get your stuff back, if the police do recover it they can return it to you. Without the serial number they have no way of looking back to see who it belongs to. Then, it sits around in an evidence room for several years before being destroyed. Lots of great stuff, nice saws included get run over by dozers and burried at the landfills every year just because there was no way to find the owner of the item because they didn't have the serial number. Write down your serial numbers!
