Tanaka, they make the best auto-feed head in the business called "the Brain".
Their trimmers are first rate. You may have to do a little searching for a dealer though.

or...

if you are concerned about compacting your soil and you have all that money, you could retrofit one of these to suit your needs.

i'm looking to buy a string trimmer to combat about an acre of these tough "turpentine weeds", the stalks go up to an inch thick at the most, i've never used a string trimmer, and i don't know what size engine i need, or whether to use string or a blade attachment.
Around here, people will do custom brushhogging for $25-$35/hour. That's what I would be looking into.

Elmore,

That is without a doubt one of the coolest things I have ever seen.
Looks like someone at john deere watched star wars a few too many times, eh?

I figured you would like it. I can't wait to get one. ha. You should see it in action. I saw one on the history channel, it's cool. Here is the plustech site : http://www.plustech.fi/Walking1.html
Timothy, I have used several different trimmers. Perhaps you can find some dealers who will let you run one for a few minutes. For my money Shindaiwa has been great. Although the B45 is no longer available in North America the similar B450 is. It looks like it is pretty much the same only EPA compliant. They also offer a line trimmer head but if you can locate some old Green Machine bump and feed heads, get you a couple. They are extremely rugged trimmer heads. I have one on my B45 and a spare if I ever wear the first one out.
I am in agreement with tony marks on following up with Roundup but I use it at a reduced rate and add an adjuvant called "Scoil" (Methylated Seed Oil by AGSCO Inc. Grand Forks, North Dakota) and am very successful at controlling/eradicating Privet and a host of other hard to kill, noxious weed species.

I've had a Shindaiwa T27 for about 12 years. It still starts as easy now as it did when I bought. Believe it or not, it turns enough rpm's that with a string head it almost floats over the ground. Would I buy another one? Not sure, dealers are very hard to come by in my neck of the woods. I bought the T27 from my Brother-in-law when he was in the business. I'm seriously thinking of buying a Robin NB2050, it's light commercial rated and only weighs 8.4lbs. I'd like to leave a blade on the Shindaiwa full time and use the Robin just for grass and light weeds.
