What are typical methods used for estimating a stump grinding job. I'm new in this area of work and I'm trying to feel it out.

Where in NY are you at?

Some people use a per inch pricing, while others use an hourly rate. Around here the prevalent way to charge is per inch, however a couple of people do go by the hour.

I'm in upstate NY. I read an archived thread from 2001 that said $4-5 an inch. Seems reasonable for smaller stumps, but not sure about the big ones. Say a 36" hardwood with some roots to chase.

Don't live on Cape Cod, MA The Average is 1.66 per inch. Some companies do it free if they remove the tree.

Not good

It runs 1.00 an inch here.

got to love ny

here in Iowa the going rate in my area is $1.40 on the average diameter of the stump.

Are you in Bumble???? NY or are you in Westchester / Putnam / Duchess / etc?

I've been up to about $10/ inch before on large hardwood stumps before, but those were special circumstances. You go up to Duchess and North no way you could even get $5.00 / inch. I know that from relative experience.

we have differing rates, 1-30", 30-40", >40". but we remove all grindings whereas other comapnies around here do not remove them

Best to charge by the cubic inch, not inches in diameter. You will lose more as the stump gets bigger. I usually just eyeball the stump and where it is located, then give a price. I can usually get $350 for a 30 in. dia. stump that's cut 6 inches from the ground. No hauling of grindings, but we will move it to different parts of their yard as long as we can wheelbarrow it. I am now very willing to haul away grindings for a fee if my mini loader can get to the stump. I did it for one job....very easy work with a loader, fun even.

Here in CA , I can get $2-$5 per inch , sometimes I bid by the inch and sometimes I bid by the job . It really depends how bad I want thejob or how good I sell the job .

Best to estimate how long it will take and figure a price per hr. By the inch the stump gets expodentially bigger and the price doesn't. A stump that is twice as big is not only about 4 times the area but a bigger stump is deeper also.
