I'm relatively new to this. The last saw I bought stated in the description that it had a 3/8, .063 bar and chain. The bar is a stihl 25" .404, the sprocket is an 8 tooth, 3/8", and the chain that came with it seems to fit on both the bar and sprocket correctly. Would a .404 chain fit on a 3/8" sprocket?

That's sorta what I was thinking. But how will a .404 chain fit on a 3/8" sprocket? Will it fit on and appear like it fits.

Cr_p now Im confused

Ist question,,,, Did ya buy it off of Ebay????? Hmmmm Im not sure but it might

if the sprocket on the saw is worn out,,,, Can you see the Numbers on the bar near the saw???? if so Post,em

The bar # is 3002 000 9731 which is listed as a .404 bar. I measured the links of the chain, and it is a 3/4" over three rivets, which is 3/8" right? The chain is stamped 983 on some links and M on some others. I put the bar and chain on my saw, and it seems to fit correctly, but I have not started it or tried to run it. Is it likely that the bars sprocket nose has been replace with a 3/8", or would this 3/8" chain fit on a .404 bar?
Thanks
Brian

It's been retiped to 3/8. Very common... Hard to even buy a big mount Stihl bar in less then 0.404 now.. A 3/8 chain will not fit on a .404 tip. Make sure you saw sprocket is also 3/8.

On the side of the sprocket it says 3/8 8 Stihl. So, i'm assuming that it is a 3/8" 8 tooth sprocket. Thanks for the help, appreciate it.

A good friend and mentor once told me the only stupid question is the one you didn't ask.

Ok, So i've established that bar that came with my saw has had the sprocket nose replace with a 3/8" So, I looked at Stihl's chart for bars etc, and it says that all of their 25" bars in 3/8" .063 have 84 Drive Links. Ok, so I call Baileys to get a new chain, they also say that it should be 84 DL's. So I order. Now, just for the hell of it, I count the drive links on the chain that came with the saw. 88. So, my new question, Does this sound right for the necessary chain drive links to increase by 4 links, with a sprocket nose conversion. Could the replacement sprocket nose be longer than others? I'm confused. :bang: :bang: :bang: :bang:

Your math is right, but your assumptions are wrong...

The 84DL count is only for the 3003 mount bars.. The 3002 mount bars are broader..

As there is currently no official 25 inch 3002 mount 3/8 bar... you have to look in the "optional" listings.. and 88DL is the correct length....
