What is mastication?

I see that there is a masticator machine...

I suppose if you were masticating all day long, your arms would get to be quite tired? (From operating those levers and so forth of course...) :dizzy:

Seriously, what would you be doing with this mastication? Hauling it off or something?

I'm not in Colorado, but why are no "skidsteers" with mulching heads allowed?
By that you've really narrowed your options on just 3 1/2 acres.

Besides there was too little information given, to get an accurate bid, one would have to add some extra money for the lonely factor. After a hard day, one couldn't relax in the local watering hole for fear of the question asked by the pretty dame: What have you been doing all day?

Thanks for the contact info Joe, unfortunately his machine is in California right now.

To answer the question about the skidsteer the job we are doing is for the forest service and they gave us the option to finish logging the last 3.5 acres or masticate. They feel the skidsteer leaves too big of chips. I know that definitely limits the options with only 3.5 acres but wanted to see if anyone knew of a machine that was in the local area.

Masticators are a PITA to go in and clean up after. Then company I work for sub-contracted one out of Cottage Grove a couple years ago. The guy did decent work. Put us to shame. But the stuff that he couldn't get flush to the ground, reach or refused to go through. Well we had too. Turn's out he got fired from working for company after he decided to sink it through a bridge. Had it stuck without telling my boss for 3 days.

On a lighter note. Why not contract out to a thinning crew to come through and mulch the ever living hell out of everything. It would be cheap.

The size of chips kinda depends on the operator, and how many times it's gone over. I know how it is, the FS pretty much tells you how they want it done. The FS loves the skidsteer mounted masticators around here. It's funny how they change from one area to another.

i wish they would talk to the foresters around here!.ive got my asv 100 on the job and a fecon head i could borrow but they wont let it fly.Seems like pretty much all the mastication for the fs around here requires hydro ax etc type of machine.
