A lot of guys go the big bore route with those saws...can the existing "small bore" piston and cylinder be used as a "big bore" alternative on an even smaller saw?

Well anything's possible if you have enough money and time, but the short answer is no.
The 6400/6401 is the smallest in that saw family.
