I have a miserable time working on sycamores, as do practically everyone on my crew. Have any of you tried any over the counter allergy stuff like claritin before the work? Any ideas?

Pollen is way worse this year than the past few years. I take the cheap allergy pills from dollar general and they work for me and I have allergy's bad.

Any time I go to a new area, the new pollens hit me. If you can findhoney grown locally, like at least within 40-50 miles, it really helps with the pollen allergies.

Love it, but I think I better go into business beekeeping then, haven't seen any of that around here. Had friend who's dad used to do it in the UK in among his apple tree orchard he had 2 or 3 hives. A beekeep doing the hives is an amazing sight you'll never forget if you see it in person. (Kinda like a skilled arborist at work come to think of it.)

You'd be surprised. I've yet to go anywhere and not be able to find some. Farmer's markets and organic grocery stores usually have a local honey. Of course we usually end up doing two or three removals with hives in them every year, and that's about as local as it gets!

Nothing works for me, and it's not just pollen

Everything about them gets me stuffed up. Just found out this February burning it in the stove was causing me breathing problems!

I think Sycamores have something above and beyond just pollen. I see groundsmen use those little paper mast while chipping. seems to help, so does lightly spraying the mouth of the chipper as you chip, if a water hose is handy.

I keep bees and i am afraid this idea does not have any proven credibility, something we beekeeps use to sell a bit more honey :hmm3grin2orange:

I can't bring myself to work while on allergy pills, they take my edge away and give me a slighly slower reaction time, i don't know why everyone says the pills don't bother them but they tamper with my thinking enough that i fear i might make a bad decision when decisions count...

Pills won't help you. What causes the sneezing, coughing and gagging reaction is the fine filaments on the underside of the leaf. The leaf is described as "tomentose". As the leaves and seed pods are chipped or disturbed, these fine filaments become airborne and you breath them in. Dust mask is a pain to climb with but not too bad while chipping. I try to prune or remove sycamores in the winter when these conditions are not present.

Both leaves and achenes (balls) have irritating hairs. Yes mask up, or at least a bandana, and long sleeves.

No, I read it on the internet. They can't put anything that isn't true!

I will say this for honey in that it does have some remarkable powers in all sorts of medical fields, just most are not proven.
I wish it would cure me when i get stung as i have an allergy to bee stings and need to carry a couple of epi pens with me, desensitisation course did not work, i think i will have to give up the bee keeping.
