2002 Vermeer bc1000xl. Used it this morning for a job, worked perfect. Went back this afternoon for another job, started the engine, no tach, therefore no feed rollers. No loose wires, nothing noticably broken, oil pressure and hydraulic oil up to par. Any ideas where to start looking for the cause?

Thanks

i cant find any service manuals for it.Now bear in mind im a gasoline engine tech but tach issues an be diaged mostly the same between gas and diesel. but ill have to ask some questions. If im not mistaken yours should have a sensor located at the flywheel. If not it will get its signal from the camshaft. First off make sure nothing is unplugged, frayed or broken. Sounds like you already have but be certain your visual inspection shows nothing obvious. If you have access to a DVOM take and back probe into the sensor connector and check for ac voltage while engine is running. If no voltage you have a problem with the sensor. If voltage is present check at the back of the tach with the DVOM for voltage. Readings should be close to the same. If not you have high resistance in wiring. If readings are like or close to like problem is with the tach itself. Hope this helps

Start looking for loose wires and a bad connection. Our 1250 was shutting down and I think it was some loose wires on the back of the keyswitch area if I remember correctly . It took a while to find it. Might have even been a bad switch. Try wiggleing it or turning just slightly .

Very true. But if it were a Ign switch it would likely affect other components as equiptment manufacturers use as few circuits as needed. So other symptems would occur with this

Does your tach run through a murphy switch? some if I remember run off the coil pack/distributor?????

If you can try a by pass & go straight from tach to the source, if it still doesnt work it could be the tach?, some models(tach) had a fuse inside!!

good luck!!

his is diesel. no coil or dist.

Opened it up this morning. Checked the ground as always and looked carefully for any loose wires. Found none. Connection good down below, no frays or wear on the wires to the sensor as mentioned on the housing to the flywheel. Tach still works because the hour meter is working. Its the old type, non digital. Didn't have a DVOM (gotta get one of those. always needed!) but got in touch (on a Sunday!) with the service guy at Vermeer and made arrangements to drop off the unit. Cost of the part is less than the fuel to get the damn thing up there! He'll get a guy on it first thing and have it back in operation asap. He was great on the last repair and I have faith he will be on this too. Any advise as to other things that may go that I should have checked while it's in the shop? Any wear items that should be replaced at 860 hrs? I've replaced the drive belt, blades just sharpened, new feed rollers last month, new engine oil and filter 30 hours ago, new fuel filter 30 hours ago.

sounds like you got it down pat. regular maintenace is the key

I ALWAYS do maintainance by the book and more. Replace as opposed to repair I say. One of these days I'll but something new and then its gonna last forever. Right now I have to work with used stuff and make the best of it but its working in my favor so far!
