Tulip trees are the largest (tallest) tree that grows east of the Mississippi. They are often referred to as "yellow poplar" even though they are not in the poplar family. I don't think they make very good firewood but I burn it if I have to cut it up anyway.

I believe tomtrees a couple years ago was talking about just a gigantic monster tulip poplar out on long island there he did a take down on. I don't want to recall numbers without a reference though, but something to rival a medium decent west coast tree in height and dang thick for an east coast tree.

A buddy and I undertook a fairly straight forward tree job. Owners wanted it down ASAP due to stump rot and proximity to the house. A 65 foot tuliptree, 24"DBH, and it had to come down in sections due to the property line. We used a Homelite XL2 on the lower 35 feet, then an electric polesaw up to 45 feet, and finally a Jameson 18 foot polesaw up to 55 feet. We dropped the top 25 foot section in one piece using a 100' rope as a persuader with no problems. The rest came down fairly quickly using a 353 Husky, a 2171 Jonny, and the rope to guide the 8-10' sections into our drop zone. 8 hours @ $400= not bad for a tree I usually would have done free for the wood. There just wasn't enough wood (1/2 cord) to justify the risk of doing a freebie.

Done free for the wood?!! Awesome! If you are free for the next two months, and are willing to travel a few hours, as well as subcontract with your own insurance, I have a few Craigslist ads to answer!! I can get you all the "Free" wood you can handle, and more besides! PM me !
