Teaching my son the ropes!

My 13 y.o. son has been wanting to 'play' with the chainsaws lately, so I finally started to teach him. His normal task is to throw the branches on the trailer, and I think he was quite sick of that, and wanted to get out of it somehow. I'm happy to switch places with him, since this will make the job go faster.
I got him started with the Husky 235e - a great little saw, and just his size. He had a blast!

! good on you to extend the tradition... i remember them days well with my two boys! full of regret and worry!! regret for the danger im about to put them into with a deadly meat eating wood chip spitting lovly girl!! lol now i have to worry they will never come home from their new love bite that will consume their lives till dooms day? lol in all reallity, its just the fact that they will learn more an better ways than the old man !@! this will leave me to sset and watch as the wood piles up faster then i can remove, split, and stack what i wished i could have done all by myself?..... oh well life goes on and someday theirs will be a repeat to the next futuremembers of "AS" !!!! It couldn't have been easy, and not just on the standpoint of worrying about the kid getting bit.
Now ya gotta worry about the Kid developing a CAD problem. Keep an eye on the Lad...

Had I done that with my sons, they would have viewed it as punishment. They hate cutting wood! For some goofy reason, they would rather go to the gym and pay hard earned money for a workout than to take advantage of a free one!

Thats awesome Unc...Last time my son tried a saw he wasn't paying attention and almost took a foot off. That was 3 years ago, maybe I should give him another chance.

Nothing like running a saw for the first time with dad right there beside you. I think I was more nervous of what my dad would do to me over the damage the saw would cause if I did something stupid.

No Poulans? Dang, Unc, now you've gone and offended those diehards over on the greensaw thread. I actually have a fairly decent Poulan that's not green. I'm hanging on to MY orange (and white) saw.

The offer's still open, if he decides he wants something to tinker with.

Pretty cool -- good for him! I'm looking forward to the day when I can teach our kids to run a saw and drive the tractor (it's at least 10 years off though, so I have time to rehearse my act).

I am glad I learned to be more safety conscious as an adult -- I wear chaps now, use hearing protection when I remember to (memory loss probably due to the ringing in my ears from past offenses), use a helmet when felling anything tricky, and wear a face shield when running a chipper. When I was growing up, my dad had a top-handle Poulan S25DA with zero safety features that was used for everything, including felling large trees. It was our only saw and nobody knew better. There was no PPE at all, not even ear plugs.

Just joshin' of course. Actually I'd kind of like to get a wide variety of saws, just to show what a nice guy I am. :msp_sneaky: In addition to the ones listed in my sig, I've got a dead craftsman, and another dead saw - I don't remember what. Dolmar is on the 'want' list as well.


But of course, my son would absolutely LOVE to have his own saw.
You got something appropriate - small with all the proper safety features? Let's do a deal!
