what a way to treat your workers at davey. this morning we found out that 15 employees from the crews we work with were going to be laid off. its funny because everytime the g.f. had a different reason. first was that we didnt have enough trucks and too many employees, then it was we had too many trucks not enough. and all that overtime and 3 years of work that was already contracted was somehow lost so now we have absolutely no work. so now i am onto finding another job. better make it quick cus i cant collect either. happy holidays

I'm not really looking for a criticism about Davey or Chemlawn, but has anybody ever worked for both companies, and if so, would you say that the "feel" of the employment environment is similar?

I know the work is different, but I hear there is a lot of overlap. It seems that Chemlawn used to be after 2 year hort degree people in the past.

I think most of the line clearance companies do that if that is what you were doing. I work for Asplundh and they only gave the employees that were laid off the last round two day notice which went by senority and I was there for over five years and I am like fifth from the bottom of the list now since they laid off twenty five people. It does suck.

Thanks guys. I might be moving to Baltimore in the next year. Davey has an office there. I'll stay away from it!

Rocky you got it there are foreman there that are afraid to climb big trees. Which pisses me off because they get paid more then i do. Then I have to climb the tree because they are suzies and there is nothing you can do about it. That is why I am trying to start my own company and quit being just a number. But the health insurance kinda scares me even though im still pretty young. That and I'm trying to get good at climbing without spikes so if I do decide running my own company is not what I want to do than I can find a better company to work for without having to be trained and get better dollars

up until about a week ago we had a g.f. who didnt ever climb or fly a bucket! he didnt even know where to put the lanyard on the bucket! tell me thats right?

Big tree companys $uck.

The best tree companys are the smaller ones.

And the most money making ones are the ones where the owner is a climber. A GOOD CLIMBER! I'm amazed how many owners don't know how to climb!

Hey, I did a stint with Asplundh. The best thing about them was the side jobs.

And the cool orange shirts with the funny name!

NJ You always can come to Afghanistan:rolleyes:

Having worked here for two months plus now, I now realize most larger companies are messed up. They are now over $4000 in arrears in my pay, as no one in the head office can seem to action a $9/hr pay raise that goes back to 6 November.

If I ever learned anything about tree companies it was you could be here today, gone tomorrow, which happened for various reasons three times to me. And in two months Davey will be looking for people because they again are swamped in work.

Good luck with the job hunting

I worked for Davey tree, Asplundh and a few others not worth mentioning, they give you experience and that is what counts. put in your time get good make some contacts and when the time comes move onto something better. they are just stepping stonesto get you where you want to be. I did it for 14 years then got a job with a power utility, been here for a year and love it.

Nick,
Lots of work here. I', just cutting part time while I'm on active duty.
Man this tree work is pricy to. Bid a dead tree at 1200 others had bid at 2600. It's dead leaning over the house. etc. but its only worth 12-maybe 1300. These guys must be swammped and leave the dead trees.

nearly 10 yrs back, I interviewed w/ chemlawn right out of college. I have a college degree w/ tree id, turfgr???, and many other cl???es/knowledge to boot. They would not even consider starting me for more $. I tried explaining my case but to no avail. I turned them down and xplained my reasons. They were pretty nice about it. Not missing it at all. No regrets.

As for who to work for to make the biggest buck - Ive come to the conclusion its yourself. End of statement.

Happy New Year to all!

Line clearance is known for last minute lay-offs. Been there and done that. That is all decided through the utility company though. We were hit 3 yrs ago. Laid off in oct and I didn't get back till the following feb. All had to do with stock prices and keeping the investors happy
