I was passing by a local park a couple weeks ago, and noticed a huge dead oak tree. I thought, boy that would be a lot of nice firewood. Anyways, passed there today, and wouldn't you know they were limbing it.
Tomorrow they will drop the rest (its huge) and I hope to pick that up too!

The truck (axle groaning!)

As we like to say back east, " SCORE, BOBBY ORR " !!

I know how you feel..... my brother-in-law works for the state highway dept. and scored me almost eight cord last summer.

Make sure you get there early tomorrow to beat the other scrounges off the rest of it with a big stick.... someone will be all over it. Nice job !!

I asked the city crew guy what they were gonna do, and apparently they grind EVERYTHING into wood chips. Makes me kinda sick that such fine wood is literally just scrapped.
He basically told me, hey, we're leaving it here over night, you want to take it, its less for us to clean up tomorrow.
I don't need to say I was grateful for the opportunity.

I have an old cemetary across the street. They used to dump cut trees way up in back & I would go up there & load my truck up. A few years ago they were cutting down an old double trunk white oak. I went over & asked the yard boss if I could help myself when they were done for the day. He said don't worry about it. I'll bring it across the street to your house. Of course that meant I ended up with everything including the 4' diameter crotches. Couldn't begin to move that stuff, so ended up ripping most of it.

Since then, they make it easy on themselves & just use the front end loader & bring over 8 > 12' long logs. I also started going down the street to the yard where the city was dumping all their trees. Got a lot out of there until last summer the city brought in a chipper that could handle 10 ft. logs that were 5 or 6' in diameter. The pile was starting to build up again, so I went there in April & got a few truck loads but had to stop as the ground in my yard was still to soft. While I was getting the wood, a city worker stopped by. Talked to him awhile & he said;"Oh yeah, I know your house".

Two weeks ago, the cemetary guys started bringing over some maple logs. The guy driving the loader asked if I wanted it all. I said; "bring it on". He told me it was a biiiggg tree. I said; "bring it on". Just finished on Monday getting it all cut, split & stacked in the shed. There was well over a cord in that one tree. Had to can a few of the bigger rounds as they were pretty bug infested.

Was out cutting the grass this afternoon & the city worker from back in April stopped his dump truck out front. Asked if I wanted any more wood. A few minutes later another dump backed into my yard & dropped a load of perfect white oak. Three foot diameter was a good workout for my HD 6401. That saw is a dream as I had everything all cut by dinner time. He said they would have more for me in another week.

It is really, really nice when you get it delivered right to your back yard.

I'll bet it is

We'll see how this thing goes. I know they are dropping more in the neighborhood. Who knows, maybe they don't want to drive it all the way to the yard, and will stop by my yard.
Now you really got me thinking!!! :chainsawguy:

I stumbled into a homeowner who had 3 maple trees cut down in his yard - I stopped and asked if I could have some wood. Walked away with more than a cord of maple! it was already cut up, so all I had to do was split it... :blob5:

Great score I had the same luck last year with the city park but I had to do all of the cutting. I took as much as I can store which is close to 3 cords. The city park provided most of my heating needs last year on only a 4 mile round trip of travel.

Oh, dont misunderstand me, I DID all the cutting!!

But with all the saws I have, I am just looking for an excuse to use em, especially during the week, when I am away from the woods!!

;)

Went back today, grabbed some more limbs that were covered in branches that they ran through a chipper.
STILL havent felled the main tree though. Gotta be about 5 cords standing there.:lifter:

The city just dropped off a nice load of 30" ash. I've got the last load all cut & most of it split. Now I got to get out there & take care of this load. The city guy said they will just keep bringing it until I holler "Uncle".

:blob2: they dropped the rest today, problem is, the main trunk is easily 32" across, and I can hardly lift the rounds...
They won't leave it in my yard either, so maybe I bring a splitter there!!!

I got almost 3 more truck loads home anyways... all the hard work will be nice come winter!!!:rockn: :rockn: :rockn:

I thought about that, but I'm gonna need a 32" bar, and ripping chain.:D

Just rip a score in it a couple inches deep on a few sides then use a maul and a wedge. No need for ripping chain. I have to do this all the time on 36" doug firs. I can't eat enough Wheaties anymore to split that stuff without a little help. ;)
